I've been a fan of Brandon Mull's Fablehaven-series, although I must admit I liked the first books more than the last two of them.
This book is the beginning of a new fantasy book series.
The main character is Jason Walker. He has often wished that his life could be less boring and less predictable, less routine. But then one day at the zoo Jason suddenly transports from into a strange fantasy world, Lyrian. Lyrian is not a boring place to be. Jason realized that sometimes it is best not to get what you want because this place is really dangerous and challenging. The citizens of Lyrian all live in fear of their mean wizard emperor, Maldor. There had been a resistant group, of course. They had tried to oppose the emperor but most have been bought off or broken, hiding, and leaving a the place without a hero to fight back.
Jason wants to go home. But that's not so easy to do.
In Lyrian, Jason meets Rachel, another person who was also taken to Lyrian from our world. Jason tries to find the hiding rebel forces hoping them to help the two earthlings back to earth.

I owuld give the characters 3 and the plot 4.
