Paranormalcy is written well enough, as far as grammar and spelling and proper usage of the English language, but I found it a bit bland and detached. It was impossible to feel any real emotion throughout it, though I did enjoy the story. It had potential, but I think it fell short.
Mostly I didn't like how sudden everything was--one minute this was happening and the next that was happening. It was a little hard to follow at times, and then there were times when not much was happening at all. For as quickly as everything happened, I guess Evie and Lend's relationship developed at an alright pace, but it still felt strange to me.
Oh, and one other thing that bothered me: I can understand that the computer translating for Lish doesn't do profanity, but I found it kind of obnoxious that after that fact is revealed, Evie goes and replaces all bad words with "bleep". I thought it was kind of funny at first, but then it just got really repetitive and annoying to me.
I liked the Faeries, since they're depicted as sort of bad ass. I read "Tithe" by Holly Black just before this and there were similarities that I appreciated, but also completely new ideas. I don't know if this is the first book with 'faery paths' or not, but I thought that was a really cool addition. It did make things almost too convenient, but it was interesting nonetheless.
Vampires I didn't much care for, but that's just because I'd like to keep imagining them as pretty and couth rather than dead and decaying. They don't have to sparkle (in fact, I prefer they don't), but they can at least look nice. ;)
Over all, I liked the book. It's nothing to really get too excited about, but if you are looking for another happy ending with faeries and shape-shifters and unknown species... well, Paranormalcy is probably perfect for you.
