Mother, wife, private investigator...vampire. Six years ago federal agent Samantha Moon was the perfect wife and mother, your typical soccer mom with the minivan and suburban home. Then the unthinkable happens, an attack that changes her life forever. And forever is a very long time for a vampire.

Now in VAMPIRE MOON, sequel to MOON DANCE, private investigator Samantha Moon finds herself hunting down a powerful crime lord and protecting an innocent woman from her ruthless ex-husband — all while two very different men vie for her heart. And as the stakes grow higher and her cases turn personal, Samantha Moon will do whatever it takes to protect the innocent and bring two cold-blooded killers to justice — her own brand of justice.

**Acclaim for the Novels of J.R. Rain**

"Gripping, adventurous, and romantic — J.R. Rain's The Lost Ark is a breakneck thriller that traces the thread of history from Biblical stories to current-day headlines. Be prepared to lose sleep!"
—JAMES ROLLINS, international bestselling author of Altar of Eden and The Doomsday Key

"I enjoyed this immensely. The protagonist, Samantha Moon, is a female vampire with a husband and children. Those predate her condition; six years ago she was attacked by a vampire and rendered into one. Now she's trying to carry on with family and private eye business, and she's a feisty, skilled person, so is doing mostly okay. It is not a horror story; she buys animal blood to eat and doesn't generally prey on humans. But her husband has an increasing problem with her coldness — not of spirit, but of body. 'You sicken me and scare the hell out of me,' he tells her. 'And when I touch you it's all I can do to not gag.' She replies, 'Words every wife wants to hear.' I love this! What makes it special are her character and nature."
—PIERS ANTHONY, New York Times bestselling author of A Spell for Chameleon and On A Pale Horse

"Dark Horse is one of the best books I've read in a long time! A great classic detective story with a modern twist. Unique and interesting characters (I think I'm half in love with Jim Knighthorse now!), a great plot that kept me guessing until the end, and some of the funniest lines I've read anywhere."
—GEMMA HALLIDAY, author of Deadly Cool and Play Dead

"Impossible to put down. J.R. Rain's Moon Dance is a fabulous urban fantasy."
—APRIL VINE, author of The Midnight Rose and Blindfolded by Lust

"Moon Dance is absolutely brilliant!"
—LISA TENZIN-DOLMA, author of Understanding the Planetary Myths and The Dolphin Experience

"Moon Dance is a must read. If you like Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum, bounty hunter, be prepared to love J. R. Rain's Samantha Moon, vampire private investigator."
—EVE PALUDAN, author of Letters from David and The Romance Writer's Pink Pages

"I totally loved The Body Departed. As someone who communicates with those who are either earthbound or have crossed over — your descriptions and interpretations of the dialogue and circumstances could not have been written more accurately. My favorite scene is the one of Jesus stepping down from the cross and then the passionate and compassionate way it was treated as he went back to the cross. I will relive that for a long time to come. You're a wonderfully descriptive writer who paints a very creative, visionary canvass based in a paranormal pallet that only a few experience and many can enjoy."
—JULIE BELMONT, author of The Path to Personal Success and Freedom and Seizing Your Success

"I thoroughly enjoyed The Vampire With the Dragon Tattoo from one of my favorite authors. A great way to spend a few hours of the afternoon."
—JEN ASHTON, author of The Pleasure Diaries and Ashton Ashton We All Fall Down

"I love Jim Knighthorse! Please write faster, Mr. Rain!"
—ELAINE BABICH, author of You Never Called Me Princess and Relatively Normal

"Powerful stuff!"

arrgh! what a cliff hanger!

Whitty "Whitty" @ 2010-10-14

Great next installment in the Vampire for Hire series. The author keeps developing the storyline around Sam's family, as well as with her friends (werewolf, fang, etc). Although this book seemed short, and left me wanting to see where Sam goes with Werewolf Boy...it was well written, and I'm definitely pre-ordering the next one!

I am definitely frustrated with the ending!! I don't think I can wait until next April to find out Fang's identity....I've got a few guesses though...

Great Read!

Ann Stough @ 2010-10-14

A really fun book, definitely leaves you wanting more and sets up nicely for a 3rd installment! The main character, Sam is an ex wife, ex FBI Agent and mom of two who ends up a vampire and is working on getting her "life" back together and dealing with her new abilities and limitations. She has settled into her life as a PI and is dealing with the post divorce issues with her ex and children. Sam starts coming to terms with her darker proclivities which makes her more interesting in this book and gives her more impowerment especially when dealing with her ex husband.

Excellent read

Bookenz @ 2010-10-31

Having read the first book, I was looking forward to reading Vampire Moon, and was not disappointed. Total page turner and I finished it in one day. But the ending -- what a tease!

I love it.

Christine E. Lee "ch @ 2011-02-16

It's been a long time since I read a vampire book about an "every day" "girl next door" woman. I can identify with the character and found myself angry at things that happened to her in the subplot. I laughed, and I shed some tears. I hope she doesn't freak out and become a sex-starved freak that has to have a parade of men to satisfy her urges, etc. etc. Glad it's not about teenagers.

No, these books aren't Othello or War and Peace. They're wonderful and engaging books that take your mind off day-to-day stressors and lighten your mood.

In fact, of all the vampire novels I've read over the past twenty years, I've really enjoyed these the most. I'm very much looking forward to the next book. Why isn't it done yet? I want it now....:)

I like this series and the Betsy the Undead series as well. Different but still good.

Cliff hanger But 5 Stars across the board

Jennifer E. Ruotolo @ 2011-02-15

Ok, There is a cliff hanger. But a good one. Luckily her new book will be out in a few months.
Overall I enjoyed this sequel book. Some of the reasons you should read it is:
1. Its current. The author uses terms that we are using right now. She knows what Facebook, farmville, DVRs and how outdated AOL is. Most books, even new releases, still seem like they were written 5 years prior. Its nice to read about things that are so current, even if its little things.
2. There is more then one bad guy. In fact, there are 2 separate bad guys, and she is helping 2 totally different people out. Unlike other Vampire Heroes or Investigators where the Hero works on 1 case and has one bad guy. Samantha is a Vampire and has a lot of time on her hands, so she is able to work on 2 different cases.
3. She gets back at Danny. I wish she did more to him, but it was still nice to see him get a punch to the groin.
All In all, I enjoyed this book. It was a quick read and I cant wait to read more work by this author.

Still Like This Series

Dan C. Boutwell @ 2011-02-01

I like the easy flow into this story from the first...makes for a good series. I also appreciate the further development and evolution of the skills as learned by a novice vampire. Although, I'm not sure I appreciate the introduction of one of the particular skills that is not typically associated with vampires. Be careful, you can go too far on these supernatural gifts.

Story line was relatively good. Liked the solution to the protagonist's unique maritial problem...not sure I would have done it quite that way. And, although I realize this is second book in a series, I was a little disappointed with the ending which is an obvious segue into series No. 3. It doesn't ruin the story, just feels funny to me...just sayin'.

In any case, I plan on reading more of J.R. Rain. The price is right and the stories skillfully developed. I wish the rating would permit me to give 4.5 stars...it's definitely worth that.

Greats read!

shumate2004 @ 2011-01-26

I loved this book. I really enjoyed the first one and was so excited to see where Sam's job would lead her this time. I cannot wait to read the next book! It cannot get here soon enough! Thanks for writing such a great series!

I loved this book. If you are looking for a fun read, you found it. So sit back and enjoy Samantha's newest adventure.

Interesting and adventurous

butterfly @ 2010-11-10

I liked this book, the story line was easy to follow and I've not long taken an interest in reviewing books so this was an important aspect for me.

This was book was better than the first one of this series that I read and the storyline got more interesting with this book.

A definite must read for all who like vampires.

J.R. Rain has easly become one of my top five favorite authors.

A Customer @ 2010-10-11

A) I truly enjoy the "Vampire for Hire" serries greatly. Book two as much as book one. This author has such a uniquely creative imagination (for which I am greatful for) that keeps both the writting and story telling fresh.

B) Which is why I must ask; Really? I have to wait until April 2011 for the third book in this serries? Excuse me if I find that just on the side of tortureous. The "cliff hanger" is just too big to have to wait so long. I mean.... people only had to wait three months to find out "who shot JR"! Just saying. :)

C) Thanks to the author. I've read 70% of your work thus far. I feel rewarded with each book I read. I absolutely loved "Elvis has Not left the building".

Original Story, Emotionally Engaging

SilverWind "Wicked_W @ 2011-02-18

I read the first book in this series and I adored Sam Moon! She comes across as very endearing and honestly, I was shocked to find out she was actually penned by a man!
Her love of her children and even the devotion to a cold (sleazy, nasty, deplorable, I could go on) ex-husband plays through. I loved how she evolved in this story and how Mr. Rain shows her humanity, even in the midst of her..."condition". I was finding myself hating Danny Moon to the point of needing justice for Sam. His take on Werewolves is also one I'd not heard, very original.
Reading the first book is recommended, not because this book can't stand on it's own, but because Mr. Rain is one talented author and I enjoy his stories very much! I'm waiting impatiently for the 3rd in this series to come out in April 2011!

Very enjoyable!

SSB @ 2011-02-15

I liked the book, even though it is a bit trivial. Most of what I read is trivial so that is not really a fault. I think that Rain is going to develop into a fine author. I may try more of his.

Vampire Moon

A Customer @ 2011-02-03

The concept of the story line keeps you turning the pages. The Author did a great job. However those who proof read her books before printing them need to look for another job. No excuse for all the mistakes.

Just as good as the first!!

T. Adkins @ 2011-01-28

After the first book in the series . . . I immediately had to get this one. I had plenty of other books to read - but this was a priority!!

Just a really good story all around. Great author. Check out the other J.R. Rain books.

Can't wait for the next in the series!!! I'm on the edge of my seat!!!

Another Great Book

BabyGirl @ 2011-01-26

I Really Enjoyed Reading this book, when I read the first one Moon Dance I just had to get the second one, For me it had everything I could want, action, thrills, love and then some.
As if it isn't hard enough being a mom but to add to that a Vampire Mom being a PI. She has her hands full. If you are Looking for another Twilight type book well this isn't one of them. I Loved that she Was Able to Stand up for herself to her ex husband who was making it difficult to be with her kids, in a sense as the reader who might share that part makes you feel powerful.
I Would Recommend this Book along with Moon Dance to anyone, The Funny thing is I couldn't put either book down until I was done reading it. Thank heaven for a kindle, I am also very very excited to get the third installment of this series. The Author Did a Great Job Bringing this vamp soccer mom to life.

Great books!!

Small Town MOM "Shan @ 2011-01-26

A fresh view in Urban Fantasy

?wazithinkin @ 2011-01-09

This second book was harder for me to get through, because of what Samantha was going through in her personal life, I really sympathized. But I stuck with it, the PI part of the story was well thought out and engaging. I love the humor, wit and sarcasm. I really like J.R. Rains writing style.

Loved it!

Eller4 @ 2011-01-08

I really enjoyed this book, I can't wait until April when the third book comes out! I hope fang is Kingsley the wolf, and I'm glad Detective Moon or Moon Dance finally puts her husband Danny in in rightful place.... On the road.

Loved it!

Lori Martin "Lori" @ 2011-01-07

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down and I cant wait for the next one!

hooked

Diana L. Cain @ 2011-01-01

Last thing I wanted to do was get hooked on another series after all I'm waiting for another Sookie Stackhouse in May - Night Huntress in February and the closing book in Karen Monings Fever series due out this month. I am to say the least tired of waiting for books.

I thought I was OK with Moon Dance, nice book but not enought to make me really want to stick with the series. Then I read book 2 Vampire Moon and now I'm hooked. Darn. At the end of book two it says book 3 will be out in December however after checking around I find J.R. Rain hasn't even started the book..arrg.

I hate when people give away plots so I won't do that to you now but I will say for me it was a real page turner, as a matter of fact I got so anxious to find out how he dealt with her ex husband that now I'm going to go back and read the book again.

A Sexy Read!

Michelle Keith @ 2010-12-31

I absolutely enjoyed the second edition to the Vampire for Hire series...Sam definitely learned a lot from Kingsley and Fang! I definitely enjoyed Kingsley giving her an orgasm! I thought that was mind blowing! I hate her husband but I am glad she got even with his no good a**!!! I'm impatiently waiting for the third edition to the series...

Sam's Journey.

Conchubine @ 2010-12-08

I have to admit, when I first saw these books I thought here we go again. But my
mistake. The writing was excellent and drew out the cast of the stories in such a manner that I just could not put down my kindle. Can't wait to find out who fang is.

Cliffhanger ending

Helen F "HelsBels" @ 2010-11-25

Vampire Moon, well what can I say. I found it hard to put this book down,it kept me enthralled. I love Sam, she is a strong woman that knows her mind and has strong emotions.I found myself cheering her on in all the turmoil with her private life. Her ex-husband is a total bastard. A well written sequal to an equally entralling Moondance. The cliff hanger at the end was unexpected, because there where still about 10% of the book left, and it was finished with shorts of the authors other books. Looking forward to the sequel.

Yea! I've found a new author I'm in love with!!

cattywitch @ 2010-11-22

This is not your same ole same ole vampire book, it doesn't have detailed sex in it, (gosh how many times does a person want to read the same thing over and over again?) It's easy reading, but fast paced, I didn't find this book draggy at all, couldn't wait to finish it, and now I can't wait for the 3rd one. I want to be Samantha Moon!!

I love this author

cerise @ 2010-11-20

I first read J.R. Rains' book "Body Departed". I enjoyed it so much that I started reading the "Vampire for Hire" series. They are full of adventure, excitement and suspense and a really fun read. I could hardly put the books down. Can't wait till the third in the series comes out. I just have to know what happens next (in Vampire for Hire #3). I am definitely going to read some of his other books. Thanks!

I absolutely loved this story. Sam Moon is a woman who has taken a lot of curve balls from life and has managed to pitch them right back out into the universe. This book left me wanting and waiting (NOT so patiently) for more on Samatha Moon.

Lovely As Always

I have read the first book and now the second. I can not believe I have to wait to find out who Fang is. I bought the book that is from Fangs perspcetive. I will figure it out before April. I hope...J.R. Rain you have a fan here. I will definetly read the others.

Love it! Love it! Love it!

M. Baptiste @ 2010-10-28

Let me just cut to the chase, I love this story. I cannot wait to the next installment. I know people want a detailed reason why I love the book so here it goes. #1 The lead character Ms Moon is a vampire but she is not some horrible blood sucking nut who becomes completely detached from her human life. #2 she has some funny dialog with herself that made me laugh out loud. #3 it's mystery and intrigue involved with this guy called fang she has a online relationship with, and has never seen in person. #4 she has some romance with this werewolf/attorney/hottie!.#5 She actually solves cases that she gets through her PI business giving interesting side stories. #6 Last but certainly not least she gets some revenge on some jerks who definitely deserve it including her jerk of a ex-husband. In conclusion this story has a lot of potential to be a really great series. J.R. Rain keep em coming!

loved this book

A thrill ride from start to finish!

Guinevere @ 2011-04-25

Vampire Moon is the second installment to this series (Vampire for Hire). Now if you havent read the first book the series I dont really suggest jumping it. Many things happened that are critical to this book and many people were brought into play and you will be sort of lost without reading the first one.

that being said, this book is fantastic.
I discovered the first one (Moon Dance), by looking the top 100 Kindle books. And boy was I happy I got it.

From beginning to end this book is full of suspense and a real thrill ride. I just never really expected any of what Sam would do next.

(Please note the following will contain spoilers if you have no read Moon Dance)

This is the story of Samantha Moon. 6 Years ago she was brutally attacked by a vampire who left her for dead. She had no idea what happened or who her creator is. Only to wake up later in the hospital and a few days later finding out she is now ... changed.
Because of this she is just playing it all by ear, she is unsure how much power she has and is just beginning to discover herself and a whole other world that she never knew excited.

In the previous book Sam's husband (now soon to be ex-husband) dropped the D bomb on her and told her to get out. Her stripped her from her motherly rights and told her to never come back that he would expose her for who she is to the world. Now Poor Sam misses her kids and is trying to find a way back into their lives.

In Moon Dance Sam had also meet Kingsly, which plays a big part in her life, and maybe love life (its hard being a vampire thats only heard how revolting you are for 6 years!)

In this book Sam also explores a much darker side of herself as well when taking on a case where she plays a body guard for an abuse woman, and another where she is to uncover a murder from a crime lord.

I think the most frustrating part of this book is the ending! It is a true cliff hanging ... I actually gasp when the ending came about and thought "OMG! Do NOT leave me hanging like this!!!"
Fortunately for me the 3rd book is out and I immediately bought it to find out what happened!

This is a great book. Its not a trashy romance novel where people life forever happily ever after, but yet has a dark humor to it.

A Must read for any Vampire book addict :)

omg!

sunshine4now @ 2011-03-30

Love it! Rain didn't let me down. Now I'm waiting for #3 :o) Keep them coming.. I can't wait to see what happens b/t Sam and Kingsley... The suspense is killing me!

Vampire Moon Review

Paranormal reader @ 2011-03-28

I was very carried away by J.R.Rain's writing style. However I should have learned when the first book ended (at less than 80%) that the books are not very long at all. When the 2nd book in the series ended at only 78% I felt cheated. Next, when I learned the preview book during the last 20% of this book was Vampire for Hire #1, Moon Dance, I really felt cheated. Can't you even review a new book rather than the last one I read? Again, I very much enjoyed this book but I will not read another of J.R.Rain's books.

good book but......

captured by the Samantha Moon series

amf0001 @ 2011-03-02

Note to other authors out there - this is how you establish yourself and build loyal readers. The first proper length novella was 99 cents, and I was completely happy paying $3.99 for this second installment. Samantha Moon's adventures continue, and her life gets even more complicated as she comes into her vampire abilities and starts crossing moral lines (or not, depending on where your lines in the sand stand) I still enjoy being with her and was very happy to see her grab more personal power in her private life as well. I love the tiny details - how thrilled she is to find that she can chew gum, her descriptions of herself in bat form. This series has the same energy and charm as the first installment. Ended with a real cliffhanger, am so looking forward to the April installment (can it be April 1st, please!!)

This novella was 4197 locations long, the download was 5301 locations, the rest was excerpts from other books.

What fun!

J. Clarkson "mupific @ 2011-02-26

I'm a huge Buffy/Joss Whedon and Jim Butcher fan, and have been looking for another series to get into. I read the first two in this series in 3 days. I love the premise: a vampire who has a human family and is struggling with who/what she has become, and dealing with real-life issues such as an unfaithful husband and child custody. The handsome, wealthy, powerful client/love interest is a bit trite, but it works so far due to other factors. I love the humor in this series- the author doesn't take himself too seriously, which is always fun. Can't wait for the third installment!

Wonderful Series!

Carol A. Thomas "Car @ 2011-01-20

This is a wonderful second installment to the series! I'm waiting anxiously for the third. While you are waiting check out J.R. Rain's other novels. I especially liked "The Body Departed". This is a great kindle published author!

Best Samantha Moon Story

mrscat @ 2011-01-16

After reading the 1st story, I had to have this one. I think this was the best Samantha Moon so far, and can't wait for more.
Learning to use her powers to help her fight for justice and her kids, there is no stopping Samantha Moon. You can't help but cheer her on. The story could be a little longer though. I didn't want it to end. This character has great potential for many more books.

Even better than the first in the series!

A. M. Brown @ 2010-11-15

I this in its entirety without my kindle turning off once!! Yes, there were a few grammar/spelling/wrong word errors, but nothing glaring enough to really take away from the story. For some reason, I was under the impression that there was already a 3rd book out in the series and we had it. When I got to the MASSIVE cliff-hanger at the end of this book, I was absolutely horrified to find out that I would have to wait until next year to find out what happens. <sigh> Fabulous 2nd book in the series and even better than the first. I look forward to more books in the series.

Love it

K. Luckie @ 2010-10-29

What an awesome take on the vampire genre. I love the intrigued of a new twist firm vamp to winged animal as well as the humor. I found myself on the last page shouting noooooooo!!!!! I want to know who fang is lol. Can't wait till 2011.

I couldn't stop turning the pages

Jerred D "[ JD ]" @ 2010-10-28

J.R. Rain has a real winner with the Vampire for Hire series. "Sam" is one of the best characters I have the pleasure of discovering in a long while. I recommend this series to any Urban Fantasy fan.

The editing was a little better this time or maybe I was turning the pages so quickly to find out what happens next I didn't notice too many errors. I wish Mr. Rain would get signed by a major publisher who could provide good editing and advice.

I would like to second or third some of the sentiments of other reviewers; I think this book lacked a major plot line or failed to continue the one established in the Moon Dance (The mysterious amulet) and was a tad bit short because of it. It did have several minor plots that were very interesting and we learned more about the characters. I also agree with one of the other reviewers that there wasn't a lot of investigation/mystery solving in this installment like the first book had. It was however, full of action and character building as Sam discovers more of her Vampiric self.

Don't let my above constructive criticism keep you from reading this book. Mr. Rain continued to stir emotion in me as I read this book. I laughed, cried, angered, and rejoiced all in the short time it took me to read through Vampire Moon.

Mr. Rain has guaranteed the sale of his 3rd installment with his "who shot JR" ending, to quote another reviewer's analogy, with "Fangs" identity. I would have personally kept his identity hidden until the end of the series. Sam's confiding in an anonymous person thru online chat was one of the coolest things about her character and allowed her an outlet and a `Confessional' in a way. I look forward to seeing what direction Mr. Rain takes their not so anonymous relationship after the great reveal.

Really enjoyable series

Frances Murphy @ 2010-10-24

Just finished Vampire Moon and can't wait for the next book. I am really enjoying this series. The main character Samantha Moon is just average gal dealing with extraordinary circumstances and making it up as she goes along. Excellent character development and a wicked cliffhanger.

Second book just as good as the first

WinterMoonlight @ 2011-05-13

I can only hope that this series goes on forever and it stays just as funny, touching and butt kicking! Started it just moments after finishing the first one and wasn't disappointed. I love Samantha. Love her Werewolf lawyer. Love the way characters from his other books show up and help. Love Detective Sherbet and that he loves his son no matter what. From the donuts to the shedding to the blood and gore. Just a great story.
