Torn - Trylle Trilogy # 2

Amanda Hocking did it again! Another page turner that I simply couldn't put down. Beautifully written, engaging characters and a story-line that didn't stop.

When we leave Wendy at the ending of Switched, she and Rhys are just starting a reunion with a very worried Matt. It's a short reunion though; the Vittra show up, kidnapping Wendy along with Rhys and Matt. They are, of course, rescued and off to Forening they go. Only this time, Wendy has a bit more information under her belt and what she does with it is interesting, to say the least. While at the Vittra Kingdom a new character is introduced, Loki, a devastatingly handsome Vittra with a devil-may-care attitude who seems to care a little too much for Wendy.

Back at Forening, Wendy begins to hone her power under the tutelage of Tove Kroner; her odd and loyal friend. Willa remains a loyal friend, helping Wendy dodge one Faux pas after another, not to mention keeping her hair under control and Finn, SIGH, Finn, Finn, Finn... Finn is duty bound to protect Wendy, and that he does. He will protect her from anyone & everyone including theirselves.

Danger and suspense lurks, the Vittra are dangerous and powerful and they want Wendy...BAD. There are some Trylle who think its Wendy's fault that the Vittra are targeting them and a quick fix would be to turn her over and there are others who feel that Wendy is the one who will save them all. She is the one Trylle who is special; with special powers that will make her the best leader in Trylle history.

Wendy's character develops beautifully; she takes on her responsibilities Wendy style. The people in her life become more developed as the story moves along and there is a closer look into the interpersonal relationship between herself and Elora that is both touching and heart-breaking.

Clever but poor editing

A Customer @ 2011-01-08

Although I thoroughly enjoyed reading her books, I had to wonder if anybody edited the books for missing words or the random addition of words that didn't need to be there. It certainly annoyed those of us that read and quickly pick up poor editing skills...did they even read it carefully???

Disappointing love story, not enough character development

The Book Runner @ 2011-02-15

Torn by Amanda Hocking
Would I/Did I buy it? Yes
Would I read it again? No
Would I recommend it to friends? Probably not

In this installment, Wendy starts falling for the enemy since Finn is keeping away from her. It is still a fairly simple story, without much emotional description which leaves the characters flat. Really, if Amanda Hocking would develop the characters by describing what they are feeling and what conflicting emotions they are dealing with that is making them act in such a way, the characters would be more likeable. As it is, they appear clueless and so does the reader. Wendy is always angry or upset and acts out irrationally at times. It would just be nice to like her since she is the main character. The kindle price and a desire to know how it ends is my recommendation for this work.

Love It, But....

Catherine @ 2011-01-03

I absolutely loved the idea of this book. I loved that this wasn't yet another book about fairies or werewolves or vampires, with the same basic characters in the same type of jobs over and over again. The one thing that completely threw me and distracted me from the story was the immense amount of grammatical errors. It wasn't just misspelled words but words that were out of sequence causing you to re-read it in order to understand what the author was saying. I'm not normally super anal about these things but when there are so many of them it throws you from the story and you lose the magic of it. That is definitely NOT something you want. While just as enthralling as the first there are just as many errors. I will probably finish the series but I doubt I will pick up her other books due to the heavy amount of errors.

You'll need a red pen to read this.

Nicole Brown @ 2011-04-28

I don't understand how Amanda Hocking could allow the release of this book onto Kindle, she should have fired her editors and publishers for the insanely poor job they did with editing this book! The content was okay even though it SCREAMS "Twilight" on so many levels, for .99 it was enjoyable to read but holy cow, I couldn't get through one page without wanting to scream because a word was missing, or the wrong word was put in place or there was some kind of terrible punctuation mistake! If you are reading the Kindle version of this book be prepared to go crazy with a red pen.

Wayne E. Clark @ 2011-02-24

I liked the first book and this one started off ok but about half way through, it became the boring. My first thought was the author was channeling Harry Potter. I just become sick of Wendy's self pity. If she wanted three men she should have just gone with it but I'm sure its all a setup for the third book. I just can't go there though. Others have already commented on the bad editing.

Not as good as it could have been

Aletta @ 2011-01-23

I didn't much enjoy the first, but I thought I would give this one a try. There were elements that were interesting and elements that were so predictable that I rolled my eyes. Amanda Hocking has a fertile imagination and potential to be an amazing author, but is still a diamond in the rough. This is one series I will not be finishing, but hopefully her other books are more polished and evolved.

Fun and Feisty ;)

A Customer @ 2011-01-10

I'm really enjoying this series. Although I feel like there are just too many questions that are repeated and answered way too much. It gets exhausting after awhile, reading the same thing over and over. And there are also a lot of grammer mistakes. Although I really do love the story line, it just seems to drag on a bit too much. I like my books clearly explained once, and to the point. I feel bad for Wendy and Finn though, they just seemed to have way too many fights in this book and each had the same outcome. Except for the last one, which was finally progress. lol Anyway. I like these books; they're a fun read!

Addictive!

Tricia Miller "Book @ 2011-01-10

Torn is a great sequel, and I began reading it on the same night that I began and finished the first book in her series, Switched. Notably, this is a self published book, and does lack a little polish and some deep editing. Regardless, this is a book worth your time and money.
Torn dutifully delivers the next phase of Wendy's story with a lot of new information and adventures. A few new characters make grand entrances in this book, and really add to the story line. I would have liked a little more character development, and hope to see this in Ascend. As many readers have reported this is a highly addictive series, so before you begin Torn, clear your schedule, get cozy, grab a warm drink and get reading!

Even for the teenage genre it was poorly written

concrete81 @ 2011-04-27

My kindle recommended the first in the series, and because it hadn't let me down to that point, the fact I was going out of Kindle service, and the books were only a couple of bucks, I downloaded the whole three in the series before reading the first. A mistake I shan't make again. It was a lack of other reading material that made me finish them.

I'm not against books written for a younger audience, I love the Chronicles of Narnia more than the next person, but when I bought the series I didn't realise it is aimed at the "young adult" market. Even so, these books were pretty poorly done, basing all conflict and storyline on the " But I didn't know" theory that Mills and Boons are so fond of. "But I didn't know he was in love with me", "But I didn't know I was a troll", "But I didn't know I was to be Queen", "But I didn't know my mother sacrificed so much as Queen and that's why she is hard on me", and so on and so forth. The fact is takes until the third book to eke out the story of the whole story of the main characters life, despite the need of this information over and over, speaks volumes.

I have no intention of reading the Twilight series, but I understand the premise, and this seems like a blatant piggy back on the supernatural theme. At least this character isn't as promiscuous as other authors make their teenage heroines and that's where the second star comes from.

Better written than Switched, but not *quite* as exciting...

D.B. @ 2011-04-15

Hocking deserves the success she's gained with this unique-premise trilogy about trolls. Book #2 explores the maturation of Wendy, who reluctantly begins to take an active role in her duties as princess. This series is an addictive and fast read with the romantic tension that we've come to expect from the author. However, I'd like to see more actions scenes...the book got a little "boggy" with all the Trylle stuff. I guess that's great for the "Lord of the Rings" types that love to mire about in all those other-world details but some of that could have been held in check and action in place of it. It's still a four star and I enjoyed the story beginning to end.

Not so good

Audio1 @ 2011-04-14

Hocking either has poor editors, is careless or both. Too many non-words (alright) and misspellings. The trilogyoly gets worse with each book. I'm sorry I spent the time with the books.

I read the third book, so not THAT bad...

L. Parisi "Lala" @ 2011-03-10

Cons:
-Wendy is still not a well developed character. Her and Finn's dynamic was horrific... I almost wanted one of them to die so I didn't have to deal with it anymore. And sadly despite Wendy being the main character, I wish it was her.

- It should not have been a trilogy... maybe 2 books. This could have easily split in two and put parts on Switched and Ascend.

-Whoever published this was drunk... many spelling mistakes and grammar mistakes

Pros:
Loki... I think he's adorable... and finally "meeting" Tove. Adore them both

It kept my interest and I read the third... so not too bad!

Torn

Ronda @ 2011-03-09

Torn, the 2nd in the trilogy, another 'must read' book that once you start, you simply can't stop! An easy read and well worth every word... I loved it!

Not really a full book...

Nicole Enerson @ 2011-03-03

--Spoilers--

Torn is the sequel to Hocking's Switched, for those of you who haven't figured that out yet. It begins exactly where Switched left off, with Wendy running away to her "host brother", who is dragged back into the story after being in the background for half of the first book. But then, of course, they're all kidnapped by King Oren, who turns out to be her father. She's rescued, but not before we're introduced to another love interest, Loki, who I think is the most interesting character in the series so far.

Wendy yells at Finn for the entire book, so be prepared for that. Otherwise there's very little development in their relationship. Wendy is depressed that she can't have the man that she's known for two months, and I'm still annoyed with it.

On the bright side, Wendy's mother finally becomes a distinguished character--more developed than Wendy, in my opinion--but it takes something fatal happening to her mother for Wendy to finally grow up, which is frustrating. I'm glad something happened, but it really turns me off that I had to wait this long for it.

Overall, it isn't really a full story; this book is really just Ascend Part 1. It doesn't have much of a climax, unless you want to count what happened to Wendy's mother, but if that was the true action of the book then the readers should have seen much more of her. The way it happened just seemed out of place.

The book does not blend together well, but a few individual points are worth looking at. But if you liked the first book, this isn't much different.

Proofreading is key to writing any book!

kk @ 2011-03-02

I absolutely love Amanda Hocking. I am an avid Kindle
user. However, the misspelled words, some words added
and not put in at all is the most annoying thing I have
ever experienced in reading these books. Evidently there
was a very incompetent proofreader or not one at all..
Very Annoyed!

Hello editor?

LegallyBrunette @ 2011-02-13

The story is interesting and an enjoyable read. I can't get past the total lack of editing. There are extra words, misplaced words, and poor grammar. I want to know what happens in the third book but I'm hesitant because of the editing - it's distracting to the point of ruining the reading experience.

Eh...

Lindsey @ 2011-02-12

I must say, I was very happy with the first book in the trilogy, however, there are quite a few typographical errors in the Kindle edition of Torn. I have not read the paperback version to compare, but it was a bit stifling to read through some of the errors in grammar. I have no issues with the story, in fact, I enjoyed it very much, but recommend trying to look past the errors so the story can be enjoyed to its full potential.

Very weak soap opera style sequel

Benjamin K. Gibbs @ 2011-02-03

This book takes all the wonderful promise of a hidden race of magical trolls living in modern day USA from the first book and throws it away for soap opera style love triangles and love interests.
Wendy, the new princess of a whole subculture of trolls learns she has super powers, maybe more super than any other troll but all she thinks about is her bodyguards' bodies. After, a few tricks the author gives up explaining any more about this. Wendy also does not ask obvious questions about these new powers or try them out much if at all. Instead we get repetitious conversations covering boring topics and girlie talk. I hardly made it through this book and gave up on the inane chatter of the third. Situations keep on repeating and plot threads never get explored. I think large chunks could be removed without losing the story. Basically, it needs editing.

Great story, horrible editing.

A Customer @ 2011-02-02

The only reason this book did not get a higher rating is because of the editing. This was a wonderfu story, but the editor needs to be fired. There were so many misspelled words and grammer mistakes it started to get annoying.

Just keeps getting better...

Kylie Brown @ 2011-01-31

I was so hoping to see the heroine blossom and stop letting others determine her life, and i was mostly satisfied with her. She couldn't be expected to grow overnight, so with tht in mind, she really started to take charge and understand what it meant to be princess. I was very happy with the author. She did an even better job weaving together book two.

Another good read by Hocking

vernoonoo @ 2011-01-23

Torn picks up right where Switched leaves off, and while the plot is a little contrived -- a princess forced to choose between duty and desire -- Hocking delivers another entertaining read. Too bad she sticks with the status quo, yielding yet another tale that is rife with typos. Despite the overwhelming grammatical missteps, however, I still enjoyed the tale.

Another great one from Amanda

M. Toraason @ 2011-01-15

Now Im hooked on both of her series! She is a great writer and I look forward to more!

interesting series

kimberly spinelli @ 2011-01-07

I was truly surprised how into this series I became. However, the typos, missing words and wrong words in this book was just ridiculous. Majority of books have a typo or two, but this was page after page. I would think there was proof reading prior to printing !!?? Looking forward to ascend.

More twists

GeorgesPrincess @ 2011-01-06

I rushed to read Torn after finishing Switched and was pleasantly surprised. The book was exciting with twists I did not see coming. However several were easy to guess. There is still a lack of editing that needs to be addressed in the books but they are a great read nontheless. I am patiently awaiting Ascend!

Thouroughly Entertaining - Can't wait for # 3!

Kate Bennett "Author @ 2011-01-03

I absolutely should not have been reading this book as I have a deadline looming from my publisher for the first round of edits in a book I have coming out this spring, but I could not stop. I read Switched (Trylle Trilogy # 1) on New Years Eve and purchased Torn the next day with plans on waiting until after I did my work, but I really couldn't. Amanda Hocking has created a truly gripping story with characters who are imperfect and loveable. I can't wait to read her other books!

Annoyed and Disappointed

Stephanie @ 2011-02-01

After running away from the Trylle Kingdom, Wendy Everly, decides that she is not going back. She wants to go back to a human life and to see her brother. Not her real brother, her host brother, Matt. And she brings along Rhys, a manks, otherwise known as a human living in Trylle, who was switched out in her place in the human world.

Going back to the human world isn't as easy as it sounds. Matt, Wendy and Rhys end up getting kidnapped by the Vittra, a rival Kingdom. Why are they after Wendy and why will they stop at nothing to get her?

As the story unfolds, you find out why everyone wants Wendy and why she can't return to the human world as a normal person. She's special and there is only one of her kind. She may be the key to peace between the two waring factions but will she have to sacrifice her own happiness for the good of the Kingdom?

I'm torn (no pun intended) between giving this book two stars or three stars. There are a lot of grammatical errors which is really annoying. But overall, I think the storyline is interesting which is why I would've given it three stars. I like the basis of the story which is about a Princess being caught with a decision and having to ultimately sacrifice her own needs and wants for the good of something else. It makes you want to read more because you're curious to see what will happen and if Wendy will make the right decisions.

*Spoiler Alert* Do not read below if you don't want to be spoiled. My comments below are a bit spoilerish.

However, the real reason why I gave this story two stars is because is seems as if every male character in the book is in love with Wendy and everyone in the story is beautiful and handsome. I get that they are trolls and supposed to be mythical creatures but do the humans all have to be beautiful too? It just gets on my nerves.

There are a large amount of male characters in the series and it becomes so much for Wendy to juggle. There is Finn Holmes, her ex-tracker and love of her life. There was Rhys, who was a manks that she got close to and felt something for him in the first book but eventually in this book he is pretty much written out of the story. And then, you're introduced to Loki, a Vittra royal, who is also in love with her though he barely even knows her. And not to mention, Tove, a Trylle royal, who ends up becoming her fiance.

I don't know how many times I rolled my eyes to the part where this guy kisses her and she feels something and that guy kisses her and she feels something too. I wanted to slap Wendy! Seriously, make up your damn mind because there is just way too many! I get that there should be a love triangle but really this was just too much.

I think most of that turned me off to the story. While I still like the storyline and I want to see what happens, I'm not that excited about this series anymore. I thought Amanda Hocking did a good job with creating the world of the Trylle but the multiple amount of guys who love Wendy just becomes annoying. Add to the fact that Wendy doesn't even handle the situations well amongst the multiple suitors it just really fell flat.

Can't wait for Ascend

S. Duman "sduman" @ 2010-12-30

Torn is even better than Switched and I can't wait for Ascend. The characters are engaging and well written, but I'm left hanging in suspense waiting to see where the relationships will go. I agree with some previous posts that there are multiple typos that can throw you off a bit, but since Amanda is a new writer, and to my knowledge has not been officially published, those things are bound to happen. I'm interested in starting her other series if they are as good as this one. I highly recommend this read!

Loved it!

Whitney Butler @ 2010-12-24

I started this series because I figured for the price, it was worth a shot. I absolutely fell in love! Moved on to Amanda Hocking's other series and loved them too! Definitely one of my favorite buys since getting an e-reader!

Part two of three in the world of Trylle...

GlozWurld @ 2010-12-08

Part two of three in the world of Trylle...
Hocking has a knack for creating a world spun from fantasy. Her characters are full & rich. This is the second of a trilogy about trolls, known as the Trylle, their enemy trolls, the Vittra, their tradition of substituting their children for human children known as changling, and a world chock full of ideas, customs, and more that will keep you reading. Wendy, an angst teen with a colorful past discovers she is not only the Trylle Princess but also the Vittra Princess. Finn, her tracker who has touched her heart, constantly reminds her of her obligations to the Trylle. Tove, her new friend who may become so much more. And all the other characters, both good and bad that will thrill you. Great read in spite of the many errors in the ebook version.

Keep in mind that this is a fluff fantasy teen read. 4* of 5*

could use some help...

AvidReader @ 2010-12-27

the beginning of this book bored me, it is rather unnecessary to do a recap of the whole last book. Sure, its good for people who are starting with the second book of the series.... but it makes it sound like shes starting a whole new series in itself with this backstory.

There are mistakes that are just horrible for a published book. words are incomplete (he is written as "h") and sentence structures are sometimes very hard to follow.

the idea in these books are great and there is a lot of potential... but please.. at least have two people besides yourself re-read and edit mistakes.. obviously they are not being found now..

some editing please !!!!!!

distracted by typos

S. Crawford @ 2011-05-22

I enjoyed the story (and the price was right), but the many typos in this book surprised me. I found it a little distracting. I have yet to decide if I will purchase any more kindle books by this author.

Interesting...

dollyrf "Work Hard, @ 2011-05-22

I can't call this book a page turner but it was very easy to read. I enjoyed reading the book because i find the author's ideas more original than all the teenage vampire books out there. Even my husband was interested in the story when I talked about the book to him... but not interesting enough for him to start reading it. On the other hand... the story line can get a bit boring and it needs more action. The main character is stuck in her castle with all her loved ones and is trying to figure out what she wants...but other than that, not much is going on. There is a love story going on and we get to learn more about the history of her family but Im still wondering why she is attracted to the ennemy at all... I think the author just lacked a bit of description there to make him attractive... or maybe he put a charming spell on her or something.

Also, I find the author repeats herself a bit too much. A lot of the stuff said in this book was already said in the first book. If someone didn't read the first book I guess they would be confused... but why would someone start at the second book anyway. Oh ya... and there are a lot of editing errors in this book... the editors definitely need to do a better job, but it doesn't make the story confusing or anything.

All in all this book is interesting enough for me to buy all 3 of them and I would recommend it to some friends... I guess I would limit my recommendation to girls who like fantasy book mixed with a bit of romance.

Can you spell E-D-I-T-O-R?

MelloReader @ 2011-05-16

I'm half way through reading this book, and appalled that this and "Switched" are replete with typos and missing words. I didn't think a book could be published with this many mistakes. It's distracting and disappointing. The only excuse that would make some sense would be that the author has written it as if Wendy is writing the book herself complete with writing errors a typical teenager might make.

I really enjoy this series

SHERRY @ 2011-05-14

I was not sure if I would like this series. I should have known I would after liking MY BLOOD APPROVES. I really thought it was interesting and I couldn't put it down. I mean really who would think a story about trolls would be good? It was wonderfully fun and exciting. I would get all nervousreading it. I was actually getting emotionally involved with the charactors. This series gets a 5 star by far.

great read

J. Schmidt "HI" @ 2011-05-13

Amanda Hocking has done it again! I love her writing style, it captures you from the first page to the point where you stay up til 1am just to finish the next chapter. I read a lot of paranormal romance series, and quite honestly it's nice to have a different genre (instead of the usual ho-hum vampires, or werewolves). All of her series are dynamite! I think i'm officially addicted.
The only negative thing I have to say, is that I wish there were more books :)

Torn

myjunk @ 2011-05-11

I found the Trylee Trilogy, Switched, Torn and Ascend so enjoyable that I started the series over as soon as I finished reading them. If you like fantasy, then this trilogy are good books to read. Amanda Hocking did a very good job creating a place that drew you in with wonderful characters, believable circumstances and enough suspense to make you wonder what was going to happen next. Even with the few errors and sporadic double words, Torn was a very enjoyable book to read.

Better than I thought.

B. Indra @ 2011-05-04

The beginning seemed to have some problems for me and I actually did not really like the main character. She was just a brat to everyone but somehow everyone liked her. She also did not have a personality that went with what she supposedly looked like. I know that all sounds harsh but I actually liked the book. I thought it was a pretty original idea and I loved the world she created. I thought I was just going to read the first one to see what all the hype was about but I ended up buying the second and I am exited about reading it.

Great Fantasy book

leonard @ 2011-04-25

I enjoyed reading this book. The trilogy is great and the author is good at keeping the reader interested. I started reading this trilogy in between waiting for my Sookie Stackhouse series. Its more for teens, but still fun to read for adults who like fantasy books. Once you get into it you won't want to stop. If I could suggest one thing to the author, it would be that someone needs to check the grammatical errors with in the second book. It was a little distracting, but I liked the book so much I couldn't stop reading.

A Little Disappointed

We'll Always Have Mo @ 2011-04-25

I fell in love with Switched because of its simplicity as far as romance, the subtle complexity of the world of the Trylle, and the personable language used to portray the charcters thoughts and actions.

I was falling in love with Torn, with the exception of a few dry spots of writing, when the unthinkable happened: a love triangle emerged. This has happened in two other series i enjoy: Inkheart and Twilight. Complex feelings emerge, the girl grows up, and grows out of the old relationship, or finds that she really belongs with her original love. I'm all for the transformation of characters, it is relatable to real life. The issue i have with Torn really isn't anything that Hocking did, except conform her heroine to fit into some sort of 'conflict of interest' as far as boys. Wendy's transformation of self and thus growing out of one relationship, and growing into another certain someone is perfectly understandable, but i thought i had finally found a series where i didn't have to worry about the bond between love interests. I would like to see, for once, the bond between lovers, original lovers, as a solid, angst-free, unemphasized thing. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case in Torn, but otherwise, was a worthwhile read.

love this author

Torn (Trylle Trilogy # 2)

writersfable @ 2011-04-20

I finally got around to finishing this book - it was not bad but not good either.

To echo some of the other reviewers, I did encounter quite a few places where words were missing and mistyped - so it was one of those guessing game words that you think up when you know a word is missing in a book.

I like the first book a lot better - this book kind of made me not really care for the character Finn nor Wendy's constant talking about how she can't be with him or whatever, got a little annoying but that's just me because of the character's age I suppose.

Loki kind of cracked me up, he was an all right character (won't give away any spoilers :))

Saw very less of Rys, which I liked him and some of Matt. I warmed up to Elora a little in this book though - so I guess that's a plus.

Like I said, won't give away any spoilers, it was an ok second story but I would not say I would read it again because of the whole Finn and Wendy thing, it go kind of old.

Better Than The First!

Aimee "Coffee Table @ 2011-04-13

I liked this much better than the first. The story, for me, really took off with this one. I liked the premise and it is intriguing. I liked the growth of Wendy and how she starts to finally stand up for herself in the role of princess. We get to see more of Matt (which I loved, I don't know why, but I love the protective older brother characters) and we finally learn more about the Vittra, Wendy's supposed enemy. The only thing I'm not terribly sure about is the love triangle turning into a love square.

I like the writing style of Amanda Hocking. It was an easy read and I found that it flowed very well. I can't wait to get my hands on the final book in this adventure. It should be very exciting to see how this all comes to an end.

Repetative use of "alright" doesn't make it a word.

M. Hardin @ 2011-04-12

First-time reviewer here. Book one was mildly entertaining, book two was terrible. I won't be reading book three, even though it's almost free.

CONSISTANTLY GOOD

NEFERTITI @ 2011-04-12

I think all three are a great read that most will enjoy regardless of age. Definately worth trying if you're needing a change from your regular genre or are tired of the overkill on vampires. This is an easy read with an interesting story line. If you're like me and are more into losing yourself in a good story and just enjoying a book, than this is for you. If you're more into dissecting it, than you should pass as you will find the characters underdeveloped and since it's self published, lacking in editing and refinement. I didn't find either to be too distracting or annoying enough to keep me from enjoying this trilogy.

Needless to say, I bought and read them all. No regrets and money well spent.

Self-Published?

Poorly written, no plot, lousy grammar - and no publisher listed.....was this her middle school writing project? Sorry, but the first two books were so mediocre I will bother with the third. There's a lot of wonderful young adult literature out now - read something else!
