Wonderful!!!

Kris "dreaming" @ 2011-05-24

New characters, old characters, lots of action, time traveling, learning more magic, and lots of surprises.

We learn so many new and wonderful things about characters we have met before. We learn things about characters that were merely mentioned in passing.

While I was worried about the time traveling aspect, the two timelines throughout the book were very easy to follow and distinguish from one another. The action for the group sent to the far distant past (and seemingly far away world of Danu Talis) was non-stop.

The current timeline, like in the previous installments, jumps from scene to scene based on certain groupings of characters. This too is action packed and full of surprises. Again we get lots of information about characters new and old.

It can feel, from time to time, like you need two charts to help keep track of everything: (1) a family tree to see who is related to each other and how; and (2) a chart to see who is on which side, moment to moment. There are folks flipping sides all over the place. Folks siding with the dark elders revolt and folks on the side of the Flamels revolt as well. It will be interesting to see where everyone ends up in the last book. One twist to confuse it all is revealed on the last page. In my head, I said "what the....? And then I can't believe I was right because I predicted it1" (So you know it's a good one!)

We get an excellent explanation of magic from the Earth Magic teacher. And we get two very different "teachings". Both are interesting, but nothing like what we've seen before. We learn more about how one's aura is involved and that both twins are more capable then realized when it comes to the magic that we know.

We learn lots of things about the characters and relationships. Some, we were hoping for, some we speculated on, and some questions are still hanging out there unanswered (of course, otherwise, what use would the last book be?).

There were funny moments, although they were less often then in previous books. It seems this is likely due to that fact that we are getting seriously close to the end of the story and the stakes have risen. The time the Flamels have left is even less and the world still needs to be saved.

The dialogue and the interaction between the characters is still wonderful. The author continues to amaze me with his ability to paint the picture of the scene in my mind. The addition of details such as the color of character's eyes, the clothes they are wearing, and the scents of their auras give enough details to be so very vivid in my mind, yet the details don't overpower the story line, nor do they add unnecessary length to the book. It is the perfect balance, again, so that I can get that image and still be moving right along with the action.

I think given the events the title "The Warlock" is a little misleading, since **spoiler alert** there are a number of them in this book. But it was wonderful to see who aligned themselves on the side of the humani and who didn't once most of the dust settled.

We are introduced to new monsters, new Elders, new magic, flying saucers (yep!!!) and lots of history on many of the characters. Abraham, Agnes, Hel, Odin, Prometheus, Mars, Scatty, are all seen here; that sneaky author with some of these connections! Numerous times while reading I had to stop and digest what I just read (in a good way). I was pleasantly surprised that I had guessed a few things (including the "big reveal" at the end - I honestly saw that coming! Yippeeeee for me! Although, I chalk it up to dumb luck since I guessed so many things wrong too!) and totally not surprised by how utterly wrong I was abut others.

I still have so many questions... but it is a wonderful book and I can't wait for the next.

Hail to the 5th

It's been hard to wait for the 5th installment, and I devoured it too quickly! If you love this series as much as I do, you'll be more than satisfied.

FINALLY!

Marc Brown "Everythi @ 2011-05-26

I've been waiting forever for this! These books are more addicting than Harry Potter, which I thought was impossible! NOT so. This is the kind of book that when you finish it you are satisfied but also disappointed because you want MORE!

Can't get enough!

Benjamin Moses @ 2011-05-24

Michael Scott doesn't seem to miss! I can't decide which is my favorite in the series, but as long as he keeps them coming - I'm happy!

He did it again!

Book Lover Sharonala @ 2011-05-24

The wait is over and I could not be happier reading Michael Scott's latest book most of the night. He did not disappoint me and now I have to be patient again for his next book.
Bravo!

WONDERFUL!!!!!!

AMAZING!!! Simply amazing! I don't want to give anything away.... but just trust me, you soooooo want to dive into this one.

Brilliant

Jill G "Avid Reader" @ 2011-05-24

I came to Michael Scott's books late in the series (I actually read The Sorceress first and had to go back and read The Alchemyst and The Magician.) This series is wonderful. Very Harry Potter-esque in the way Scott weaves deeply complex and mystical stories around seemingly ordinary kids. In The Warlock, many of the minor characters which have been slowly introduced and built up through the series, are given their opportunity to shine. Best of all is the dichotomy of Alcatraz and Atlantis. Beginning with the twins, Scott has carefully constructed a world where everything is paired...they are all love stories...although not in the modern construct of love....it is mostly about friendships...bonds between people...good and evil, dark and light and this is equally so with the contrasting islands... one under the ocean and one isolated above it. I can't say enough about this beautifully constructed book. If you are new to the series, go back and read the first books to catch up in order to best appreciate the fabulous journey Scott takes his audience on with The Warlock.

more please!

This is just so delicious! Every page held a sense of newness - even for characters we've come to know so well. Great writing; great reading.

Just as the cover suggests, this book strikes GOLD!

J. Smith @ 2011-05-24

The fifth installment of Scott's fantastic series of mythological and historical inter-fusion could not have come with a better background color for the cover, GOLD! Because that's what this book is! This extremely fast paced title will have you flipping page after page, and before you know it you've polished off the whole thing. And isn't that what a good book is all about? Keeping your hands glued to the covers?

Continuing the story of teenagers Josh and Sophie Newman, The Warlock follows the siblings as their paths part ways and they find themselves further and further from each other. Nicholas and Perrenelle Flamel have the odds stacked against them, as they are literally fighting for their lives. The hodgepodge grouping that has stepped back in time to the island nation of Danu Talis, led by the mysterious hook-handed figure of Death, battles against insurmountable foes. The God of War Mars Ultor is awakened, Billy the Kid and Machiavelli struggle with releasing the cache of monsters, Dee and Dare continue to corrupt Josh, and Sophie finds out just who her Aunt Agnes really is!

Early in the book we find the ever confusing motives of the Witch of Endor uttering a single line that is true to it's core, "this world is in need of a warlock"! Indeed we were, Mr. Scott... Indeed we were!

BEST BOOK OF THE SERIES

chicklit "chicklit" @ 2011-05-24

It is going to be impossible for me to write the perfect review without totally spoiling the book...THERE ARE SOOOOOOOO MANY AMAZING SPOILERS IN IT. Seriously, this is SUCH a great book. Fast moving, compelling and the characters literally jump off of the page. I've read every book in this series and this one is, by far, the best...and I LOVED the other ones. Michael Scott set the bar really high as he fully involves his characters in the various life or death scenarios they are trapped in. The book keeps switching off between stories...again, I don't want to give anything away...but there are some unbelievably exciting scenes...especially when Josh is with Virginia and Dee on the boat...when Scatty, Joan and crew are trapped in...well...YOU'LL JUST HAVE TO READ IT. And you'll never guess what happens with Flamel! Anyway, I devoured this book and am already counting down for the next book in the series...Speaking of which, can't there be more books...I don't want it to end. And look for the biggest reveal--which will BLOW YOU AWAY..in the final chapter.

Spellbinding!

Zephfire "Zephfire" @ 2011-05-24

If you haven't read the 4 titles in the 'Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel' series that come prior to The Warlock, then I would advise you do! Not only are you missing a great and award winning series, but the plot is very detailed and you may find it hard to follow the fast-paced roller coaster that this book is!
My son and I have read all the prior titles and enjoyed them immensely, but this one is my favourite!
The plot twists and turns at a break-neck pace, more characters are arriving, some we've met before, some are new to us, they have one of two aims.. to either aid Nicholas and Perenelle Flamel to retrieve the Codex and save the humani from certain suffering at the hands of the Dark Elders.. or to aid Dr Dee, Niccolo Machiavelli and the Dark Elders to gain the final two missing pages of the Codex and commence the Final Summoning that will see the humani enslaved to them as they regain control over the world.
Exactly who is on which side can never be guaranteed, and some characters are questioning the strength of their conviction and loyalty to their chosen side.
Josh Newman has left the Flamels and joined with Dr Dee.. will Sophie be able to convince him to return to the Flamels and to her side.. or will she leave the Flamels and her belief that they are doing the right thing, just to be re-united with her brother?
Meanwhile, some of the Flamel's supporters are off on a mission of their own, William Shakespeare, Comte de Saint-Germain, Scathach and Palamedes are in a very strange and mysterious place, having been taken there by the equally mysterious Marethyu.. who seems to have an agenda all of his own, but which side of this epic battle is he on?
You'll need to read The Warlock to find out the answers.. and it's an exciting, spellbinding and totally absorbing read!

Best Book of the Series so Far!!!

Jade Sealey @ 2011-05-25

Sophie and Josh continue to be my favorite set of twins in Michael Scott's fifth installment in the Flamel series. This time, they are on two separate journeys and it is unclear where they will end up. Josh gets caught up with Virginia Dare (yet another great female character) and Dee while Sophie is on her own path, continuing to learn magic and save Flamel. This is the best book of the series and I'll be sad when the series is over.

The Wonderfully Exciting Warlock!

JEK @ 2011-05-25

The Warlock, the 5th installment of The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series is the best one yet! Michael Scott has certainly outdone himself on this one! This book is full of action and surprises at every twist and turn of the story, and you will find yourself zooming through its pages to find out what happens next. All the old favorites have returned to the adventure as well as some new and interesting additions.

The start of the book picks up right where The Necromancer left off. The twins have parted ways, Sophie with the swordsman Niten and Josh with the evil Dr. John Dee and Cunning Virginia Dare who are being hunted by the elders. Perry is concerned for her husband Nicholas, and the mysterious Witch of Endor is about to give the world back a warlock. Marethyu has assembled his army of Joan, Germain, Shakespeare Palamedes and the fearsome warrior maiden Scathach and taken them back to Danu Talis. Danu Talis is breathtaking and exciting, while the events about to occur on Alcatraz are heart stopping! Will Billy and Machiavelli unleash the creatures on Alcatraz and send them to destroy San Francisco? What will happen on Danu Talis? Will Josh and Sophie learn more magic? Many questions have been asked and numerous answers await you in this wonderful book!

If you are a fan of the series The Warlock does not disappoint and if you haven't yet read the series, an amazing adventure awaits you starting with the Alchemyst! What are you waiting for?

Wow, again!

MIchael Scott did it again. His books are always a great read, and this one is no exception. Thank you, Mr. Scott!

I work for a #1 NY Times Bestselling Author and Michael Scott is absolutely brilliant!

Jordan Roberts "funn @ 2011-05-29

Machiavelli is at his best in this delicious book by Michael Scott. The fact that he continues to breathe life into such amazing historical characters like Billy the Kid and Virginia Dare---Yes! she is a real character and should DEFINITELY have a spin off series--- is incredible. The magic/fantasy elements in this book are also top notch, especially when Flamel is seemingly on his death bed---but I can't give too much away. Sophie and Josh continue on their individual journeys and it's fascinating to see the choices they make and how they inform the lives of everyone around them. The action is fast paced and the scenes on Danu Talis took my breath away. I pre ordered this book and read it in one sitting from cover to cover. I don't know if I can wait another year for the next one!

AMAZING!

Arbiter of Words "Ar @ 2011-05-25

This is a fantastic book. Amazing story. There are so many different stories to keep track of, I am not sure which I like MORE!
I think my favorite is everything which happens on Danu Talis and, of course, Scathach's unbelievably bravery in the face of danger.
It reads really fast and the characters like Tasagaglalal and Isis just blow my mind! Definitely read this book!
And hey - Gorgeous Cover, right?

What a Ride!

Ragamuffin Vagabond @ 2011-05-27

I discovered this series about a year ago after the fourth book came out. I devoured the first 4 books in a month's time. It has been agonizing to wait a year for the latest installment; "The Warlock". The action and adventure in the previous four happened at break-neck speed. And the "Warlock" doesn't slow down or disappoint one single bit!
I paced myself on this one and still ended up finishing it in 3 days. My only disappointment is that I will now have to wait another year before the next one. Oh well . . . at least I have 5 books to re-read until the next.
"The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel" series is a great read for Fantasy/MythLore enthusiasts. (And I would add that there's stuff in there for SciFi readers as well). Do yourself a favor. Add this to your collection!

just buy it!

Nickie Dee @ 2011-05-27

Best book of the series! Fluid and compelling, Michael Scott has a real winner on his hands. I loved the many different elements of this story....especially Sophie's distress as she is conflicted about her loyalties...to her brother or to her destiny. The stuff on Atlantis is terrific and I think Virginia Dare is a really strong character....tough as nails, knows what she wants and even more powerful than Dee. Even though the Flamels take a bit of a backseat in this book, there is so much action that I don't really miss them because all of the secondary characters really jump center stage. Can't wait for the next one.

Strong series continues on

Fence Jumper @ 2011-05-27

This is a very good book, though it has a few flaws in my opinion, but still worthy of 5 stars.

Good:
Strong cast of characters.
Strong narrative.
Interweaving series of events that really give the book depth
Dare and a few other characters really are a mystery based on some of their actions. They do some really evil things, then some good things. It makes you wonder what their motivations are and what they will really do.

Meh:
I dont like what is happening to my favorite character (josh)
Nicholas only had like 4 lines throughout the entire book (2nd fav character)
Why does every little thing make Sophie get an upset stomach??? seriously...
Cliff hanger ending. I dont want to wait a year for the final book!

The biggest gripe I have is that the book really couldnt stand on its own like some books in a series. It really felt purely like it was setting up for the final book where as most of the other books felt like they could stand on their own as a story.

If you are a fan of the series, give it a go you wont be disappointed, and here is to a year wait for the final book!

Great addition to the series, but did this really take a year to write?

Billy @ 2011-05-24

Pre-ordered this book and recieved it a day before it released in stores. Gotta love amazon.

If you're addicted to fantasy fiction like i am, this series will sate your addiction perfectly. It's filled to the brim with gods, magic and myths. The book is almost 400 pages, but it's a fairly quick read. Mostly because the entire book takes place in less than a day. The author crams 5 different plotlines into a single book, and manages to keep them cleverly parallel as he switches back and forth.

My only qualm is that once I finished the book, I felt like nothing big had really happened. I understand that Mr. Scott wants to keep the final battle for the end. He's used the last few books to flesh out his fantastic world as much as possible, integrating deities from all corners of mythology into the story line. the problem is; by the time he's finished with the background, there's very little space left for plot. I just wish that after waiting a year for this book, the story to which i'm so utterly addicted might have been continued a little bit more. And the final installment is another year's wait... I'm going to die.
