Editorial Reviews
“THE SHOP is a hair-raising thriller from start to finish. J. Carson Black draws the reader into a world where nothing is as it seems. This book is both spooky and convincing, just what a thriller should be.”
---T. Jefferson Parker, New York Times bestselling author of THE BORDER LORDS
When former Navy SEAL Cyril Landry and his team of assassins enter a chalet in Aspen, Colorado, he recognizes the pop star Brienne Cross asleep on the couch. As he is about to kill her, she wakes and looks into his eyes.
There is that one moment between them. And then she is dead. Someone with a higher pay scale than Landry has been ordering celebrities killed. Now he wants to know why.
At first glance, the shooting death of a police chief in a rundown Florida motel room appears to be an assignation gone wrong. But as detective Jolie Burke plumbs deeper into the crime’s murky undercurrents, she unveils a conspiracy shocking in its scope.
In her relentless pursuit of justice, Burke follows a byzantine path that will take her from the lottery-driven fantasies of a yard maintenance worker to a Panama City Beach missing-persons case and finally to the island compound of her estranged uncle--the Attorney General of the United States.
The death of a celebrity in Aspen has set the table for an orgy of death, destruction, and infamy. As the stakes rise, Jolie finds herself teamed with a killer. Only Jolie and her unlikely partner, Cyril Landry, can dismantle the shadowy entity known as The Shop--before it strikes again.
"Infused with an original voice and packed with compelling characters, J. Carson Black’s THE SHOP is a thriller to pay attention to."
----David Morrell, New York Times bestselling author of THE BROTHERHOOD OF THE ROSE
"Fresh and imaginative, J. Carson Black’s THE SHOP is a riveting read and a compelling tale of character. From FBI agents to local cops, from heroes to villains, THE SHOP is an exciting, sweeping crime thriller that will linger in your mind for a long time."

Cyril Landry is a loving husband and father, a former SEAL, and now a killer working for The Shop. After his latest assignment -- a massacre in Aspen, Colorado -- Landry develops an emotional bond with one of his victims, a young and beautiful pop star. Feeling that something went wrong, Landry sets out to uncover the plot he's been part of. Meanwhile, homicide cop Jolie Burke is investigating a case that quickly goes out of control. As she untangles the mystery, the body count rises. When the subplots converge, Landry and Jolie find themselves facing a shocking conspiracy with an electrifying climax.
Anyone who enjoys a good thriller should check this one out. The Shop is full of intrigue, twists and turns. With such glowing blurb quotes from Gayle Lynds and David Morrell I knew I couldn't go wrong -- and I wasn't disappointed!

Another winner from the pen of J Carson Black
So many thrillers nowadays seem to have the same premise, with nothing new to set it apart from the pack. Not so with J Carson Black's THE SHOP. Even the title hints at intrigue and something out of the ordinary. I've read all of this author's novels, and each one demonstrates her skill for the craft by way of extensive research, character development, prose that sings, and thought-provoking plots that stay with you long after you read The End. Black is truly a master at writing police procedurals and high-concept novels. They just get better and better. Once you've sampled one, you won't be able to stop there.
Other reviewers have already described some of this book so I will refrain from going into any details. If you have not read any J Carson Black you should definitely get this book as well as all her other books. She has such a way with words and always comes up with a fabulous story and this book really had a great story. I would love to see it as a movie.
The characters are fascinating as always and it was so interesting to see how she fleshed out the main characters. I love the way she describes things as well. It is always so well done and you almost feel like you are part of the scene. Her books are never too short or too long and you always feel like nothing was left hanging so you are satisfied and not left wondering what or why something happened.
For those of you who don't like swearing and sex there is none in this book. It doesn't bother me but I know it bothers some people so that is why I am mentioning this. There are some murder scenes but they are not described and talked about too much so if you are squeamish nothing should bother you too much.
I agree with the other reviewer that J Carson Black is every bit as good as the most well known authors out there.
I guess I am going to have to find something else to read because I have read all her books now & cannot wait for a new book (hint hint) !!!!!!

This book had a lot of potential. However, there were far too many plot twists and turns for no logical reason, too many unrelated characters, core characters who were not fleshed out enough and too many loose ends. It's as if the author lost her way, or forgot to take the story all the way to the end. I really like this author's books, but this one just lost control.
The Shop is a very well written, meticulously researched thriller. It grabs you from the very first paragraph, and doesn't let go until the thrilling climax. This one is not boring, so be prepared to keep reading until you finish it!
I must admit that I went searching for a book like this after the Obama Bin Laden hit. I wasn't sure what I was getting into, but all in all I am quite happy that I put time into this book. Given the choice between Carson Black and Tom Clancy, I might reach for Clancy, but all in all I would read more by Carson Black.
First-rate thriller from an accomplished author
The Shop is a complex, page-turning thriller that ties together a small-town police investigation in Florida, a horrific mass murder in Aspen, and a clandestine government conspiracy. I don't usually go for conspiracy novels, but this one was so tightly plotted and featured such compelling characters, I was instantly drawn in. The prose is crisp, polished, at times electric. Landry - who comes close to the stealing the show - is a weirdly fascinating villain/antihero, and Jolie and Nick are sympathetic and memorable. The police procedural scenes feel authentic, and Landry's omnicompetent spycraft is consistently inventive without becoming overly far-fetched. The multi-layered story builds to an intense, satisfying climax. I enjoyed J. Carson Black's previous thrillers (Darkness on the Edge of Town, Dark Side of the Moon, and The Devil's Hour), but The Shop is her best, I think.
Spooky thriller rivals Dean Koontz
In THE SHOP, J. Carson Black has achieved a writer's dream - a literary style distinctly her own. Her writing is visual and unique. Perhaps, of any thriller writer, her images and voice remind me most of Dean Koontz, while her crispness of language also reminds me of Ernest Hemingway. No word is wasted, and every word has power. But none of this would work if it were not for Black's unusual story telling. She turns a cold-blooded killer into a hero of sorts by twisting the expected inside out while creating a heroine both women and men can love. Homicide detective Jolie Burke is a stand-out protagonist portraying the toughness of a woman challenging a man's domain yet filled with uncertainty and fear because of a past she can't remember. The juxtaposition of ruthlessness versus vulnerability of her two main characters is as fascinating as the plot, in which each layer is peeled away to reveal more and more bizarre kinks in the conspiracy the two unlikely partners solve. From the opening paragraph to the last sentence, J. Carson Black had me hooked, and it's a story I won't forget. In fact, THE SHOP has all the ingredients to make a great movie that would require Oscar performances by the actors. Tell your friends to read this thriller. They'll thank you.The Shop
J Carson Black delivers another excellent mystery. Great Characters and and even better story make this a must read. All we need now are more books from her!
I picked this book up because, like many people, I was interested in reading something about Navy Seals.
What a good one!
I really liked this book because it was a special read. Very exciting, professional, and fun. Check it out if you enjoy cool stories.

This was good!
I like these kind of action adventure books.
Every so often you have to suspend your dis-belief, but I liked both main characters.
I know it must be hard to get all the details right, but in a crime novel when the
gun is chosen it's a Sig 26. There is no Sig 26. Did you mean Sig 226?
A bit later, they get on the Hinckley Yacht and navigate by the Loran. I don't even think they sell Lorans any more, GPS is cheap and reliable. It's a yacht...I have a GPS!! That's like saying, "we went to the penthouse and listened to my collection of records"
Okay, I nitpicked. But that's why I didn't give it 5 stars.
So, overlook the little details, enjoy the read, and feel good that you got a great book cheap.

"The Shop", A book purchased for my Kindle from Amazon
At first I thought, I had made a mistake in ordering this book, but surprise. It pulled me right in. Sometimes I thought it went in to many different directions and sometimes wondered where it was leading to. But it sure did keep me from wanting to put it down. I liked that there was not a lot of foul language in it. I hate reading a book only to find it is full of foul language and that is half the book. Good job there. Goes to show you, it can be done.
The only problem with this book was I wanted the bad guy to win.
Landry, a former SEAL, is now an assassin for The Shop, supposedly taking out people hostile to America. He rationalizes he's still serving his country until he kills a young pop star his daughter admires. Then he begins to suspect The Shop is simply another commercial enterprise.
When a Florida police chief is killed, Jolie Burke is the detective working the case. Even with her own hangups, she manages to follow the threads back to where they intersect with Landry's vengeance on the man who sent him to kill the pop star: the Attorney General of the USA.
Great pacing, good characterization, kept me reading into the night.

So I wanted to find out what happened, and some of the subplots were delved into a bit too deep, but it written as good as the big names write. The delivery was intriguing, mainly because it was unclear till half way through what was happening. I would like to have known more about Jolie earlier in the book, which would enhance the value of her personal ghost story. Overall a good book, with a galling premise. Well done!
This book is terrible! After reading the other reviews I thought this book showed a lot of promise, but found the writing and plot to be confusing, disorganized, and boring. The character development was subpar and several characters were developed that then had almost no bearing on the story. The only reason I finished this book was in the hopes of it all making sense in the end, only to find the book has no ending! Instead you are directed to a website which is just a marketing ploy! I found this to be an abuse of the audience and a cheap ploy to market the author's other (probably just as terrible) books. It is as though the author wrote this the weekend before the deadline and felt no need to submit quality work. This book should never have been published. Do yourself a favor and do not waste your time reading this book.
A total waste of time. The book was scattered in content and characters. The heroe was a sick twisted waste of flesh. The author did a poor job af putting this book together and did not bring any single character into my life. There is no ending. I am sorry I purchased this book and unhappy that I spent so much time reading it. This writer is off my list of acceptable authors.

THE SHOP opens in a tense action sequence with the assassination in Aspen, Colorado of Brienne Cross, a well known actress/pop star. The hit is carried out with military precision by a lone assassin who vanishes from the scene, leaving no clue behind, least of all a motive.
The assassin is Cyril Landry, former SEAL and now a member of a black ops unit (known as "the shop") operating within a private security firm. The firm has been used on occasion by the government for missions requiring solutions outside the law. Landry is a man of contradictions - on the one hand devoted to his family, on the other capable of killing dispassionately. But the execution of Brienne Cross troubles him. For the first time, he finds himself drawn emotionally to a dead target. The years of mental programming that have conditioned him to kill, never questioning an order, are suddenly coming apart. In the course of this psychological dislocation, Landry will come to learn why Brienne's death was ordered, and will turn against the shop.
A second story line opens in a motel room on the gulf coast of Florida where a police chief has been found dead. Sheriff's homicide detective Jolie Burke is assigned to investigate. She suspects the suspicious death was a suicide, covered up by the victim's wife to protect his name. A tough, seasoned investigator, Jolie has some deep issues in her life, and a terrifying, repressed fear from early childhood.
Jolie's investigation will lead to a puzzling string of interrelated homicides that reach into the highest corridors of power. Eventually it will bring her into contact with Landry, on his own mission of vengeance against the shop, and a confrontation with the childhood memory she has blocked out. The life and death climax, when the antagonists finally clash on a private island off the Florida coast,is a masterpiece of narrative tension and suspense.
THE SHOP is original in concept, skillfully plotted and paced, with three dimensional characters, all of which make for an intriguing read.
