Editorial Reviews

This is the eBook version of the printed book.

The Java EE 6 Tutorial: Basic Concepts, Fourth Edition, is a task-oriented, example-driven guide to developing enterprise applications for the Java Platform, Enterprise Edition 6 (Java EE 6). Written by members of the Java EE 6 documentation team at Oracle, this book provides new and intermediate Java programmers with a deep understanding of the platform.

Starting with expert guidance on web tier technologies, including JavaServer Faces and Facelets, this book also covers building web services using JAX-WS and JAX-RS, developing business logic with Enterprise JavaBeans components, accessing databases using the Java Persistence API, securing web and enterprise applications, and using Contexts and Dependency Injection for the Java EE platform.

This edition contains extensive new material throughout, including detailed introductions to the latest APIs and platform features, and instructions for using the latest versions of GlassFish Server Open Source Edition and NetBeans IDE. Key platform features covered include

  • Convention over configuration, so developers need specify only those aspects of an application that vary from the convention
  • Annotated POJOs (Plain Old Java Objects) with optional XML configuration
  • Simplified but more flexible packaging
  • Lightweight Web Profile that is ideal for developing web applications

The Java Series…from the Source

Since 1996, when Addison-Wesley published the first edition of The Java Programming Language by Ken Arnold and James Gosling, this series has been the place to go for complete, expert, and definitive information on Java technology. The books in this series provide the detailed information developers need to build effective, robust, and portable applications and are an indispensable resource for anyone using the Java platform.

printed online tutorial

Jeanne Boyarsky @ 2010-10-10

"The Java EE 6 Tutorial Basic Concepts" is the official tutorial covering all the Java EE technologies. I can't believe it has been 4 years since I read the Java EE 5 version. Last time I remarked 1300 pages was too heavy. Version 6 is split into two volumes which is nice because you can carry it around. The basic concepts one covers web/ejb/jpa/web services.

"As part of Sun's 'The Java Series' this book has the same content as you can find online. Why buy a book you can get for free? Convenience!! You can take it anywhere and read it anytime." - Dave Vick - JavaRanch Review of the J2EE 1.4 version. This benefit is back.

Other dislikes:
confusion between Oracle/Sun.. For example "Oracle web site" [...]". I'd like to see mention of a transition.
wasn't clear what was new in Java EE 6.
as in past editions, it reads better online than printed.
extensive forward references and lots of repetition. For example, they repeat the six steps to open a NetBeans project 12 times!
many examples didn't explain how/why to do something - like whether to call a web service directly from a JSP.

I did like the walk-through of certain technologies. And the good quality cover paper that doesn't get damaged even if you spill juice on it!

There were good diagrams and charts and good case studies along with several excellent chapters. While I like this version better than #5, I would say to read the pieces you are interested in online and spend your money on a different book.

I dont recommend

Burhan ARAS @ 2011-06-27

At first sight it seems as a very useful book but it is not really. It just contains tutorials and there is almost no real-life code. There is no sample project or case studies. I do not recommend to ones looking for an advanced book.

Decent technology digest

East Coaster "Back B @ 2011-05-21

This is not a classic walk-through tutorial.
Three stars for misleading title.
The book is useful though - contains basic reviews for most Java EE 6 components and links/references for more detailed documentation.
If you are new to Java EE, I'd recommend taking simple tutorials at Netbeans site first.

Where's the CONCEPTS?

Steve Dambrosio @ 2011-07-20

This book is a disappointment. It's a disappointment in the same way that "The Java Programming Language" by the same publisher was a disappointment. "The Java Programming Language" was required text for an introductory online Java class that I took at UC Berkeley. I opened it a few times but closed it and haven't used it since. All the good stuff I learned about Java and everything I needed to complete the class (with an A grade, no less) I learned from O'Reilly's "Learning Java." Those people know how to write and they know how to explain the *concepts* (no, I don't work for O'Reilly). These authors don't seem to be interested in explaining the concepts. They tend to jump right to the details (rules and syntax and other details). This book (the one I'm reviewing - the EE one) would be more appropriately titled if they removed the word "Concepts". Take the Java Persistence APIs - the idea of layering an object oriented model on top of a relational database and allowing you to work at that level is really mind-blowing and I'm sure a good author could devote several pages if not a whole chapter to the concepts. But no, these authors skip right to the rules for building Entities. A good thing about this book is that the examples work (at least the ones I tried) and you can learn by looking at and tinkering with the examples if you like to learn that way and if you have the time. The book is very thorough and useful, almost a reference guide in my opinion, but I wanted the *basic concepts* explained and this book fails to deliver that.

The Java EE 6 Tutorial: Basic Concepts

Richard Tucker @ 2011-05-19

The Java EE 6 Tutorial: Basic Concepts, Fourth Edition, is a task-oriented, example-driven guide for developing enterprise applications on the Java Platform Enterprise Edition 6 (Java EE 6). The book is written well for basics concepts of the Java language. Its a great book to start on Java EE 6. It has great examples to follow along with, which includes JavaServer Faces and Facelets, web services using JAX-WS and JAX-RS, developing business logic with Enterprise JavaBeans components, accessing databases using the Java Persistence API, securing web and enterprise applications, and using Contexts and Dependency Injection for the Java EE platform. This is one of my favorite Java books thats in my library that does a great job in explaining Java basics. Overall the book is a great start to learn the Java programming language.

A 'must' for any serious Java programmer

Eric Jendrock, et.al.'s THE JAVA EE6 TUTORIAL: BASIC CONCEPTS, fourth edition offers a fine Java programming language key using task-oriented, example-driven details on developing enterprise applications for Java Platform, Enterprise Edition 6. Members of this program's documentation tem contribute valuable practical applications for new and intermediate Java programmers alike, making this a 'must' for any serious Java programmer.
