My Yoga Studio is like having a personal yoga teacher on your Kindle.

There are many benefits to practicing yoga. Done properly, yoga can help you increase your strength, flexibility, and balance. It can improve your posture as you become more aware of your body, and it can help you relax, even in the midst of a stressful environment.

My Yoga Studio will guide you step-by-step through a series of poses illustrated with a picture and a text description. As you move through the routine, a timer will count down, showing you how long to hold each pose before gently transitioning to the next. 25 different poses are included. You can use one of three included routines (Sun Salutation, Stress Melter, or Balance & Peace), do poses individually, or create your own custom routine. Exercises are designed to strengthen your core, and do not require any special equipment. As you can do these exercises anywhere you have floor space, My Yoga Studio is a perfect companion for frequent travelers or home use.

My Yoga Studio is ready to be your personal guide anytime you want to steal a few moments to center yourself.

What a great idea!

Dawn S. Miller @ 2011-03-04

When this app showed up at BooksOnTheKnob, I went over to Amazon and bought it immediately. Even if it only gave a rudimentary set of poses, it had a timer for each pose, and it offered the opportunity to create my own routines. On days that I didn't have yoga class, I could do some very basic warmups.

This app can do that and more, with a bit of fudging. (More on the fudging in a moment.)

The three default routines are slow and gentle, and very familiar. I placed the Kindle at an angle in front of my mat so that I could see it as the app went from one pose to another. This isn't great, since in some poses I'm not looking that direction. Sound would be nice, maybe a beep at the beginning/end of each pose.

You can also create your own routines of up to 99 poses per routine. My Yoga Studio has an easy-to-use interface for this. I created 10 routines in about 20 minutes.

It gives the choice of 25 different poses: Mountain, Raised Arms, Tree, Chair, Forward Bend, Downward Facing Dog, High Lunge, Low Lunge, Straight Leg Lunge, Warrior 1, Warrior 2, Warrior 3, Plank, Cobra, Locust, Child's, Cow, Cat, Camel, Half Lord of Fishes, Full Boat, Happy Baby, Bound Angle (which I always thought was Bound Ankle), Lotus, and Corpse.

They all default to 30 seconds each, with the exception of Lotus and Corpse, which default to 60 seconds each. You can reduce the time of each pose to 5 seconds and increase it to over an hour. The timer wigs out at 60 minutes, showing it to be 1:60:00 instead of either 60:00 or 1:00:00. However, it doesn't seem to impact the actual time.

Each pose is clearly defined, with the start position, what to focus on, any recommended next poses, and the benefits you should get from the pose.

Since it's limited to 25 poses, the app is missing some key poses such as Chaturanga Dandasana, Bridge, the Pigeon poses, and those used in Moon Salutations. The limitation, I suspect, has to do with the way the poses are each given a letter of the alphabet to make creating routines easier.

So this is where the fudging comes in. Let the poses represent pose variations and multiple poses. For example:
* Cobra can stand for Cobra or Upward Facing Dog;
* Plank can stand for Plank, then the next time it can stand for Plank and Knees-Chest-Chin, and the next time for Plank and Chaturanga Dandasana (or however advanced you're feeling that day);
* If you tend not to use one of the 25 poses in your routine, let it stand as a substitute for a missing pose. For example, I rarely practice Camel, so it stands for Pigeon in my routines. If Camel shows up in a standing flow, then it represents Standing Pigeon; if it shows up when I'm on the floor, then it represents Sleeping Pigeon and/or King Pigeon, depending on how stretched I feel.

Three recommendations for the developer.
* First, add sound, at least a beep between poses and perhaps the name of the pose. With that addition, I'd give this app five stars.
* Second, allow the word "right" or "left" to be added to a pose. I forget which side I'm on, and that's one of the most frustrating parts of practicing without an instructor.
* Third (and I don't know if this is feasible), either add more poses than 25 or--if 25 is the limit--add the option of more poses that can replace poses in the 25.

To sum up, this is a very good app for creating timed yoga routines, and I hope the developer expands it in the future.

Need text to speech

Helen B @ 2011-03-04

This is a great idea, and the pictures are well-designed for the B&W Kindle. There's even a timer to allow you so many seconds in each pose, plus the ability to create your own practice. The downside is that it is not text to speech enabled, so you have to keep looking at the kindle, thus the reason for the three rating.

More for beginners

E. Bedan @ 2011-03-04

The available poses seem too much for beginners who have never done any type of yoga at all (in my opinion). Most important downside for me: 25 poses seem too little for someone who wishes to advance in their practice. I thought this would be better than printing out poses since it has a timer. I also must agree with the previous comment about text-to-speech; it would be nice to have some sound, even just a little tone when the timer goes off to notify you of transition.

Great Exercise Routine

meik1 @ 2011-03-08

After reading so many books on the kindle, you sometimes need to get moving. This app is perfect for that. A newbie to yoga, I found the instuctions are fabulous and the timer perect for knowing when to stop. The text to speech feature would be a wonderful addition, but in the mean time I am just propping my kindle. Buy this for a great push to sneak some yoga into your day - even just five minutes. Hey, it is quicker than running to the gym, and certainly more portable.

Quick to set up & use

Steven M. Heffern "R @ 2011-03-05

If you've had some yoga at all, this is a handy little tool to design your own workout or use one they have.

I purchased it as an alternative to the stick-man worksheet my yoga instructor handed out. I live in an area where my cell modem only has two bars, so I'm wary about kindle active content, but this downloaded quickly and doesn't require continuous connection to the internet.

I like it. Well worth the $1.99 in my opinion.

Great Yoga Workout

Charlie5000 @ 2011-04-05

I have always been somewhat interested in Yoga but not enough to practice it with my wife's yoga videos. I saw this for $1.99 and thought I would give it a try. I love it. I have been doing it regularly for about a month. I use it after I get up and for a break at work. I will sometimes use it before bed and on other occasions as needed. I have been losing weight, feeling stronger, and I have overall felt better. It has helped to relieve tension headaches too. I have really begun to love yoga.

I am just a beginner at yoga so some of the poses are a bit difficult. However, I have been doing modified versions of those poses. I have noticed that as I get stronger, my form and endurance has naturally improved. In any event, this has been well worth the $1.99 I paid for it. It would be awesome if there were other similar Yoga workouts that were developed for the Kindle. I also would like it if there was a chime or noise when the timer counts down rather than having to periodically glance at the timer.

In any event, I highly recommend this "app" especially if you are new to yoga and have any interest in Yoga.

Great concept

Diane Vanaskie @ 2011-03-10

I reallylike the idea here but I have two complaints:1. It needs to beep or something when it is time to change poses because it is not always convenient to be looking at your kindle when doing yoga. 2 It needs more poses in its library. That said, what's here is great!

Not practical

Soyoung Choi @ 2011-05-19

I don't really see how anyone can use this and I have no idea how people could have given this product a 5/4 star rating.

Firstly, it's definitely not for someone who has not taken a yoga class before and/or are not familiar with the poses because you're probably not going to read the fine prints on how to do the pose while you're in a downward dog for example.

Next, they should have put in a beeping noise or something to let you know that the time is up for the pose and it's time to move onto the next pose. Otherwise, like me, you're constantly trying to look at the timer on my kindle which is not so practical in different poses and postures.

I thought the idea was great but there are minor kinks that made it a major flop for me.

Perfect for Beginner Like Me

D.R. Ross @ 2011-03-23

I really didn't have the problems others spoke about in their reviews, perhaps because I read through the entire group of lessons carefully before I began. I loved how the positions were put together for me as a beginner, and understand that later I may want to make up my own program. Next best thing to being in class.

Good idea, needs improvements.

Jonathan Sprenke @ 2011-03-17

I like this idea but I agree with the other reviewers. There needs to be some kind of gentle beep to let you know to move on. The first pre-programed practice all the poses were set for 30 seconds. I see there is a way to change the time when you program your own, so it would make more sense for a vinyasa style practice. There also needs to be more poses or some way to buy more poses to add. I was trying to program a specific energizing practice and it doesn't have all the poses I want. So maybe this should be My Yoga Studio for beginners and a way to add on or buy a more advanced versions.
The general concept is a good one. If like me, you've been practicing for awhile but have a hard time remembering what to do when at home, this would be perfect if it had the aforementioned tweeks.

Neat app for Kindle

Tammy Finch @ 2011-04-10

This is such a great idea. I've used this often. It's easy to follow and simple poses but effective. I hope they come out with a few more poses or add on to this. Its a great little item for Kindle and saw the abs application also. Looking forward to using it too. Keep up the good work.

Almost perfect

Lisa Marie "I am ele @ 2011-04-06

This is great for me. A girl on the go. For the price it is fantastic. However I do agree with other reviews that "text to speech" would make it hands down perfect. At the very least a tone so you know when to move into the next position.

I love this..........but there are a few problems. C.Brake ( Ohio)

C. Brake @ 2011-04-03

I love this because i love yoga. but there should be like a little beep or sound when the positions change other wise i have to have my kindle right below me or i have to keep looking at it. And you cant decide how long you want to hold a postion when you make a routine. 30 seconds is way too long! I tried to do it with one of my friends who likes yoga and she got bored! Despite these problems I really like the concept. Its worth $2.00.

Needs Audible Timer

J. Bowling @ 2011-03-17

I have to admit getting this app has got me into doing yoga. I never considered the practice until this was available for my Kindle. The developer does a good job of explaining each pose. My biggest complaint, however, is that one has to keep an eye on the timer instead of focusing on the exercises. I don't know if Kindle has the capability, but an audible timer would be nice or a text-to-speech function that tells the user "next," "switch sides," etc. I also have the Abs Anywhere app and have the same wish list. More advanced positions would be nice as well.

No text-to-speech. Disappointing!

D. Elander @ 2011-03-12

I agree with Helen B. When I purchased this, I thought it would be something I could use to practice between yoga classes. I also assumed that I could set it on text-to-speech and wouldn't have to constantly look at my kindle. Unfortunately, that's not the case, which for me, makes it awkward to use. I'm disappointed.

Doesn't work on iPod / iPad

D. McKenzie @ 2011-03-04

Looks very useful, but it would be nice if it were available for
the kindle apps too. Not even available for download to any other
device.
