There are several Kindle guides, This one is not like them - it's all new and written specifically for Kindle 3. If you're a busy person and just want to use your new Kindle, not wade through extra long manuals, FAQS or blogs about Kindles you don't own, this one book on your e-reader will guide you through it all. ...Then it becomes your browsing homepage to access Facebook, Twitter, News, calendar notes, and all the things you use the internet for.
--indexed, plus one click hyperlinks that jump right to the explanation you need, then let you come right back to the index or overview.
-- It's super quick -- no fluff at all, just what you need to get you going and having fun. AND it's not just a book - and no, it's not skimpy or short, just because it's set up for very fastest use. Look at what else you get:
BONUS-Built-INs !!!
-- You can refer to or use any of the items as you like. They're jumplink menued to let you get to them, but stay out of your way when you only need how-to info.
-- You don't even have to read this book all the way through! If you NEVER had a Kindle before, or already owned one, there's a special section for your most likely questions.
In The VERY FAST GUIDE you'll have always with you:
The easiest ways and places to get books free -with links to do it; charging Kindle; Shortcut keys; best ways to hold and use it in or out of covers; how to buy and get free books; make your own Kindle docs, read your Email, set up your photo shows and Kindle background music, use Audiobooks, make it read to you, organize and move content collections; ALL about the browser, what got fixed in the first update; what to do if it freezes up?
--EPUB books and ways you can find these, get them onto or read them directly from your Kindle 3.
-- Immediately look up any topic using a complete hyper-linked Table of Contents; photos where they help to show you how.
BUT IT'S NOT JUST A BOOK!
-- for extra convenience, built right in are:
.. Direct links to Facebook and Twitter - not just to post a note, but the full sites; new Facebook and Twitter Breaking News, too.
.. A custom search page that lets you google just news, or only recent postings, or find places and services near where you are.
.. a useful built-in 12 month calendar (2010, 2011, and 2009) with notes capability,
.. home pages with quick links to YAHOO, GMAIL, and facebook email so you instantly launch and go there in Kindle browser with just one point and click - no menu-ing needed.
Right in the book, direct Google clickable links so you don't have to always go find the experimental browser and start it just to do a quick search. Many Kindle 2 urls/bookmarks won't work correctly on Kindle 3 browser; these do.
.. Social site resources - find bargains, restaurant reviews, discounts, and more. It's way more than posting notes to twitter or facebook.
.. Political News? Here are direct browser links to headlines and politics around the world. Links to let you follow the people you choose and support - all of the parties - right from your Kindle.
.. U.S. 2010 Senate and House Midterm elections - imminent, important, and interesting - here are links to the polls, analysts and results.
Check the free sample, then download and own it all instantly, for less than the price of just one Latte.

Hi..Here you have all the useful items that I wanted on my own Kindle 3, and more. I owned the Kindles 1,2, and DX,- about 85 books read at last count. Search my name and see other earlier popular Kindle guides. The Kindle 3 is way different - keys, controller, features gone and added; vastly different browsing; and all the older guides are obsolete. Here's my first new one. Happy Kindling!

Absolutely, the first kindle book you should buy
Decent quick guide, does what it promises to do
This book is what it says, a quick guide to the Kindle 3 and I did get valuable information and tips from it, that I have not (yet) found in the manual that came with the kindle.
I did download a sample, first; and from that sample learned a tip on holding the kindle in landscape mode, with adjustments to the words-per-line, that does (or can) improve readability. I find I actually prefer for now, reading in portrait mode (up and down, not sideways orientation of the kindle), but trying out the suggestions in this book did give me a huge appreciation for the elegance with which the kindle developers implement the alternative orientation - for example, I was curious if the 5-way controller directionality would also change with "turning the kindle sideways" and it does! Left and right buttons in portrait mode DO become up and down in landscape orientation. I never would have tried this out without this ebook (never say never but I probably wouldn't have for a very long time, on my own).
Based on the usefulness of that tip, I bought the rest of the book. For me though, it was the highlight of the book and I felt a tinge of disappointment when I finished the rest of it, but that said I did get my $3 worth too. I give it 4 stars but just can't quite give it the 5th. As I write this review and compose my thoughts on the matter, the more I do appreciate what the author has provided, but it misses 'something' for me that I just can't quite put my finger on.
I am one of those people who do read manuals, and actually enjoy technical documentation. If you don't like to read the directions, or manuals, but want a quick quide that gives you what you need to know with the minimum of effort, this guide is great. And, it's only about the Kindle 3 -- I only have a Kindle 3. I do not need to know how the Kindle 1, Kindle 2 or Kindle DX works. It's also not just a bulleted list of disorganized "tips". There is a coherent organization and it is written in a readable style.
There is much in this book that is useful, easy to find, quick and accessible. The user manual that comes with the Kindle 3 is good, readable, and clear, but it's a more leisurely read. This book could be thought of like a map that gets you to your destination on the kindle, while the user manual is more of a tour-guide. Both are good to have.

This book is exactly what it says it is: a VERY FAST guide. If you want something longwinded, read the manual that came in your Kindle, or look for others on the Kindle site. But if you want something breezy, fast, and informative, this is the place to start.

If Mr. Ursem would have had someone proofread the article it would probably be a much easier read and actually enjoyable. Instead it seems like a first draft and is very hard to read and understand. Maybe even a few extra commas would help. The grammar is poor and I could not force myself to continue after a dozen pages. There are many Kindle 3 guides out there. Sample them first before you purchase.
It's not too late Don. It's digital. Take it and show it some care before you publish the 2nd edition.

This book has a wealth of information. I really appreciated all of effort Mr. Ursem put into this book so I don't have to read every blog, forum, or Google everything to find answers to questions or help with my Kindle. His writing style takes a little getting used too, but once you get his sense of humor he can be really funny AND informative. Also I love the book cover :-)
GREAT FOR 1ST TIME KINDLE OWNERS
I would highly recommend this book for 1st time Kindle 3 owners. I received mine as a gift and found that the factory user guide gave very minimal start up information. I was pleased to learn how much my new toy could do and how easy it is to use. The hyperlinks from the TOC make the book very easy to navigate. You can skip the topics you already know about or don't care to use.
Hi,
This is the best guide. I have got one with my kindle. Need to buy another one. Bud this one should be given by Amazon. Not because it is useless, but the tool must come with the appropriate guide.
It even covers ergonomics.
A must have

Excellent resource. WEll written, easy to navigate and helped me use my kindle more effectively. Highly recommend this if you are new to Kindle (which I am) Would buy other references written by him.
This book supposedly has all the answers but is not for anyone but a pc expert. I need a book to tell me what this book says.
If you are not computer savvy don't buy this book.

Having used other Kindle user's guide for my previous Kindle's, I was looking forward to a new guide for the Kindle 3. What a dissapointment! This is poorly written and organized. The text often changes font and type-size mid-page, for no apparent reason, and some sentences seemed more like text messages. There are sections that are redundant, and I did not get as much new info for my K3 as I did from the user's guide that came with it!
As a not very computer savvy person, this easy to read book has saved my sanity several times in the few weeks I have had it. Ilove my kindle , but the instuctions it comes with are sparse at best. This book was worth it for the instructions on how to do collections alone, and just walked me through how to unfreeze my kindle. This is one book that will always be on my kindle
and you thought the Kindle was just for reading. HA! You can have it read to you, if you want. You can listen to music, like an MP3. You can surf the internet. And a whole bunch of other stuff, including reading books, magazines, newspapers, blogs, articles and so on. With the help of this book and its built in links, you can try them out while reading about them. Sweet!
The guide cost's practically nothing so for what you pay you're getting some very useful info not included in the manual. It helped me and I'm glad I bought it.
i am a first-time kindle user, not a left-brained person, and the sample of this book was worth the price for me! you will probably know from this sample if the book will be a helpful tool. it is very clear; i didn't have to look up terms introduced to understand instructions. the author has a conversant style, which i appreciate...very readable. i had no idea what this device was capable of, and i was thrilled before i learned of the myriad possibilities! i am glad to have it on my kindle for such a handy reference, as i don't retain technical information well. a wonderful resource for anyone just getting comfortable with this new technology.
I am a professional writter, and while I would agree that this guide ain't written up to a certain scale of grammatical standards, it is nevertheless EXACTLY how I want a guide as this puports to be to be written... straight and to the point, and in language that isn't carefully sculpted so that the reader never understood the author's intent in the first place.
In short, this guide is truly the insider's guide to the Kindle 3, even if you can't dumb down your linguistic skills to the every-day ordinary man.

I was going to try a 'sample' of this product but: SURPRISE! I somehow became the owner to this!
I don't remember selecting the "buy this product" button but I guess I bought. hmmmmmm.
Good thing it's only a couple of dollars or I would want a refund. I don't like being forced into buying somebody's book, or somebody's anything.
I suppose it's a good book though. Lots of information. I have not read the whole thing yet.
Be careful if you want to 'sample' this product! Make sure it doesn't sneak up and become YOURS without you knowing!

This could be the only Kindle user book you will ever need. As its name suggests, it has a "get in there, get it done, just the facts ma'am" style that is informative, non-patronizing, and often amusing. The author is either not a professional writer, or a very good professional writer in a heck of a hurry. The layout isn't fancy, but the content is readable, well indexed, very well hyperlinked, and very, very complete.
In addition to his encyclopedic knowledge of what you can, and cannot do with the Kindle 3, the author also has strong (and strongly expressed) opinions of what you should, and should not do with it. Fortunately, he clearly discriminates between "can and "should", leaving the reader in no doubt about what's necessary, what's possible, and what's a desirable.
Finally, unlike many, released-for-launch technical books, I have not found a single statement in the "Fast" guide that is false, incomplete, ambiguous, or misleading (definitely not a professional tech writer ;). The is the first kindle book you should buy, and probably the last you should remove.
