James Hudson Taylor (Chinese: 戴德生) (21 May 1832 – 3 June 1905), was a British Protestant Christian missionary to China, and founder of the China Inland Mission (CIM) (now OMF International). Taylor spent 51 years in China. The society that he began was responsible for bringing over 800 missionaries to the country who began 125 schools and directly resulted in 18,000 Christian conversions, as well as the establishment of more than 300 stations of work with more than 500 local helpers in all eighteen provinces.

I've read other biographies of other christian giants & pioneers, but this one stands apart because of how well the Taylors and friends documented their lives. Interspersed within this succinct yet colorful biography, the authors (Hudson Taylor's son and daugther-in-law) share numerous letters written to and from Mr. Taylor throughout his life. These precious letters prove to be jam packed with spiritual wisdom and insight. They provide us with an unique "inside look" into a practical man who was utterly captured by God's purposes.
This little book is huge in terms of its presentation of a life lived exclusively by faith in God. It presents the life of a man who learned through the challenges and trials of 50 years of missionary outreach to inland China the faithfulness of God to supply every need. This book will touch your heart; it will challenge you with respect to your own commitment to trusting in the faithfulness of God, and it will encourage you to live by faith through the example of an ordinary man who did just that.
An awe inspiring story of love and its true meaning
It is very difficult to express my innermost feelings as I read this book. The love of a man for His God and the people of China is unfathomable. His intimacy with his Heavenly Father is a relationship to be desired and sought after. A love for a people God instilled within him. Words cannot express what is in between the covers of this book. His work in China will last because of the everlasing God that he served and China will never be the same. He and his family gave all. His work goes on in the Spirit which he was so in one with. Only God knows how many people have and will be touched because of the love he had for his God and the people whom he served so many years not out of duty but out of love, with sacrifice and great cost to himself and family. A sacrifice that they did not even consider as one but as a privilege. This is not one you will read once but many times and encourage others to read.
Hudson Taylor's Spiritual Secret
This is beyond doubt the most powerful book ever written on mission. I make this bold generalization after more than 45 years of practicing and teaching missions. Anyone traveling overseas to engage in mission work should read this book first.
I was impressed with not only how much Taylor loved the Chinese people. But how much he trusted God for all of the needs in his life. And all of the things he accomplished. The medical center he established. And how he trusted God for the medical supplies. An inspiring little book.
The story of a Spiritual Giant
Hudson Taylor was a true spiritual giant who didn't just talk the talk, he walked the walk in every way possible. He did so in such a humble and self-sacrificing way that one can only admire and respect his courage and ultimate faith.
British-born, Mr. Taylor lived in the 18 and 1900s era and felt led to a life as a missionary to China. He became a pioneer in many ways and one of those ways was to adopt the dress and customs of the people he so loved, a practice he was sometimes criticized for.
Never before have I read such a biography of a life more driven by faith in spite of the daily trials he dealt with. He was an inspiring example to any of faith.
Near the end of his life that was mostly spent in China, he returned to the people, from a brief time overseas and was greeted: "And oh, how the people responded - both missionaries and the Chinese - everywhere he went. He was called `Venerable Father' and `Benefactor of China' by many who came to greet him. Crowds gathered to hear him whenever he spoke and sometimes just to see him pass." Of course Hudson Taylor took this in stride, so humble, self-effacing and gentle was he.
This well-written book is full of details chronicling Mr. Taylor's life, some in the form of the eloquent letters he sent back home. The last paragraph ends with his daughter-in-law's account at his death: "...and oh, the look of rest and calm that came over the dear face was wonderful! The weight of years seemed to pass away in a few moments. The weary lines vanished. He looked like a child quietly sleeping, and the very room seemed full of unutterable peace." - a tribute of a life given totally to the God he loved and served.
"Hudson Taylor's Spiritual Secret" is an amazing story of an incredible man and well worth the read. If you are a person of faith, you will definitely feel blessed.

Excellent Book to the Understanding of Abiding in Christ...
Very well written and worthy of commendation. I recommend in for all, especially to those who are seeking, with hope, a trophy of God's dispensations in the diverse and many operations of this world about them, and in them.
There certainly is a refuge in the midst of the storms, who is Christ Jesus...but, sometimes, it is neddful to direct thy bow to face the storm, and to ride the waves right into the storm. It is there, that we may find an "eye" in the storm, with peace and tranquility our anchors and mainstay.

Hudson Taylor's Spiritual Secret
Great book containing the life of a man of God who gave all to reach the lost in China. There is much insight into Hudson Taylor's relationship with God. Very instructive and enjoyable to read.
This is an excellent book! Hudson Taylor's journey of seeking after God is an inspiration to anyone who longs to do the same. The way God used him to draw the Chinese to Himself as a result is also encouraging. The secrets that he discovered along the way are like a breath of fresh air to the souls that long to see more of Jesus in their lives. If you like this one, you'll also like _Mountain Rain_.
Hudson Taylor: A Life Well LIved
I just finished reading this excellent book for the third time since becoming a Christian 33 years ago and would recommend it to anyone wishing to be challenged in their faith and dependence on God. The book is the story of English missionary Hudson Taylor, his calling to bring the Gospel to the multitudes of China, the creation of the China Inland Mission and so much more.
The book follows the life of Hudson Taylor from before his conversion, through his medical education and his calling to the mission field of China. It continues through the challenges and obstacles of getting to China, of establishing a base there and learning how to bring to the Gospel to the Chinese people. His decision to trust in God's provision in every area of his life and the resulting struggles are intimately portrayed in a way everyone can relate too. Hudson Taylor became one of the first foreign missionaries to adopt the dress and customs of the Chinese people in order to better better reach them. The story details his faithfulness to God through a variety of obstacles and challenges including the death of his first wife, the death of a child, the threat of physical harm, even death and during periods of great want and need. Yet, we don't see Mr. Taylor wallowing in self-pity or running back home to England. Rather, he sees God's faithfulness even in the trials and renews his faith in God.
However, though the theme throughout the book is missons, the secret it contains is not limited to evangelism or missions. It is relevant to us all. Hudson Taylor's spiritual secret was not his innovative, ground-breaking missions techniques nor his faith missions approach to support. It was his undying faith and belief that if God had called him to bring the Gospel to China, then God was also able to provide whatever he needed to do so, be it money, transportation, physical safety, co-workers, even the resulting fruit itself. Mr. Taylor's deep personal struggles and choice to believe God for what He promised is both inspiring and challenging. If Hudson Taylor could continue to believe God in the face of such unbelievable challenges, then we also can trust Him since we serve the same God.

Excellent model for ministry with family and faith.
As a married minister with children, I often wrestle with how much my family should sacrifice for the good of others. I have heard horror stories of preachers' kids leaving the faith because they resented church, and felt as if they missed out on much that life offers. I want to please my Lord with all of my being, but could my zeal hurt them instead of help them? Can they learn to love Jesus with all of their being without having all this world offers?
Hudson Taylor's Spiritual Secret was a huge boost to what a married man with children can accomplish by faith. He did not have everyone's support, but he unquestionably had the Lord's. His zeal, passion, and faith led to revolutionary efforts spreading the gospel in China. The work met with much hardships and heartaches. Yet, he had what mattered most -- peace. He did not have that at the beginning of his work. Through time, he came to know God's peace that passes all understanding. He lost some of his children while doing the Lord's work. He lost his first wife at a young age. He had to send his older children back to England for educational purposes. Taylor endured a lot of silence from supporters in England when he craved moral support. Yet, through it al, he possessed the peace that only the Lord can give.
When Hudson and his wife lost their child, we do not read that they blamed the work in China and went home. No, you read of an accepting peace, and a determination to stay the course. When his first wife died, she passed on comforted by the promises of God. Through conflict, roadblocks, and other difficulties, faith in God won by far.
Reading this book helped remind me that when you have a genuine love for the Lord, it will infect others. Prayer is powerful, and it is a great tool to help your family and friends. I don't have to accept the advice of some that does not challenge ME to challenge my family. God wants us all in covenant with Him, and He can work out things in His time. In the meantime, we are to pray, laying all our cares before Him, and get out and do His work. God will take care of the rest! Again, this book was a real help to a married minister with children pondering what we are able to do in the kingdom of God.

A Must Missionary and Leadership Read
If you are fairly comfortable with the way you are living, this book will disturb you! Hudson Taylor serves as a challenging example of what it means to walk by faith and not by sight. He was a man of prayer and great vision for God and His mission. Anyone thinking about going into cross-cultural missions should read this to see how to start preparing now to live simply and in complete dependence on the Lord. Leaders in missions and the church should read it to see what it looks like to hold those under your leadership to a high standard of faith and hard work. This book is a classic and will be in print for a long time!
Hudson Taylor's Spiritual Secret
Very informative and honest account of what it is really like in practice to trust in Jesus Christ to fulfill your needs when you are loving and obeying the Lord's Word (the Bible).
This book is an inspiring story of Hudson Taylor's life - the sacrifices he made of himself and his family to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. He was truly a faith-filled man, and his story will encourage your faith too! (We named our son Hudson after this Christian man.)
This got me an A on a college paper on Missionaries in China. It is a great primary source.
Biography of the originator of China Inland Mission
I found this a great book to inspire me on what it means to trust our God in all things including finances. Hudson Taylor suffers setbacks, but trusts his God, who sees him through all his difficulties. I read this as a recommendation from Chip Ingraham's book Good to Great in God's Eyes: 10 Practices Great Christians Have in Common chapter 2 "Read great Books." So far I am not dissapointed.
one of the most provoking men i have ever read about. although the book is old and some of the language takes some getting used to, the power of God shines through and really left me asking questions and seeking after God and His Kingdom. highly recommended!!! =)
I'm sure I will enjoy reading this great book. Shipping and delivery went well.
When I got this I went straight to the middle looking for the "spiritual secret," rather than reading the whole story. I knew most of Hudson Taylor's story because many of my most spiritual and committed friends have read it.
I turned right to it. It was worth it. Hudson Taylor's not the first to say it, but it's well said.
Every spiritual person I know recommends anything by or about Hudson Taylor. I do, too.

One of those books that really does change your course of thought and action
Oh, what a blessing this book was! Hudson Taylor was a man convinced of the trustworthiness of his Father, hence, he was a man of great faith. He counted disbelief and fear as they truly are, a grave affront to a faithful God. With faith, love for the Lord, and compassion for the lost, the Lord accomplished much through this man.
Would highly recommend for any Christian who would increase his/her trust in our Lord.
A few Hudson Taylor quotations from the book that encouraged me:
"I notice it is not difficult to remember that [my children] need breakfast in the morning, dinner at midday, and supper at night. Indeed I could not forget them if I tried. And I find it impossible to think that our heavenly Father is less tender and mindful of his children than I, a poor earthly father, am of them. No, he will not forget us!"
"There are plenty of ravens in China, and the Lord could send them again with bread and flesh . . . Let us see that we keep God before our eyes; that we walk in His ways and seek to please and glorify Him in everything, great and small. Depend on it, God's work, done in God's way, will never lack God's supplies."
"We have to do with One who is Lord of all power and might, whose arm is not shortened that it cannot save, nor His ear heavy that it cannot hear; with One whose unchanging Word directs us to ask and receive that our joy may be full, to open our mouths wide, that He may fill them. And we do well to remember that this gracious God, who has condescended to place His almighty power at the command of believing prayer looks not lightly on the bloodguiltiness of those who neglect to avail themselves of it for the benefit of the perishing."

This story has without a doubt changed my life. The faith that Mr. Taylor had was incredible. I won't give any examples because I don't want to spoil it. :) But I can say that you will not be disappointed. I have read many many missionary stories and must say that this is my second favorite; my favorite is Missionary Patriarch: The True Story of John G. Paton, which I also highly recommend. God used Mr. Taylor in such a powerful way, not only in his own ministry, but also in the lives of those who have read it. After reading this story, I can say with confidence that your faith will be strengthened by it.
This work regarding the testimony of God's faithfulness to Hudson Taylor is truly inspiring and amazing. Hudson Taylor was truly a unique individual that sought to pioneer the mission movement in inland. While other missionaries were content to stay in the large metropolitan centers of Asia dotted along the coastline, Taylor ventured forth with a firm faith in God with the purpose of bringing the Gospel to the Chinese countryside. The title of the book is somewhat of a misnomer as the secret is no secret. Taylor bowed his knee in simple obedience to clear biblical commands. The secret of the book is how it documents Taylor's account of how God used him. God said "Go!" and Taylor went, and the influence of that is still being impacted on Asia. The book shows the uniqueness of Taylor as God worked in his spiritual formation, mission philosophy and practice. The Hudson Taylor's spiritual secret is attributed to his radical commitment to live a life in which he completely trusted in God and the living out of the Great Commission.
In this "spew thee out of My mouth" church age, we don't know what we don't know. Point out to me one Christian today whose LIFE is a testimony as was George Mueller and Hudson Taylor's. If you desire to be mentored by one who knows Christ in that their life was Christ--rather than live "darkly" in today's Laodicean church age--then come out of the collage and into God's vision for His children through the testimony in this book. If you miss this, you may wander on in the wilderness for years unnecessarily. This book is 100% Walk, not theology.
