Editorial Reviews

In a world that views absolute truth, right and wrong, and salvation as being subject to individual interpretation, the Bible’s unwavering proclamations and miraculous stories seem obsolete in modern times. But it is not God’s Word that has changed. Indeed, its relevancy and its power to transform lives are intact. What has changed is the number of people who consult it. Now more than ever the need to read the Bible, to understand the big picture of its storyline, and to grasp the relevance this has for your life is critical. As with its companion volume, For the Love of God—Volume 2, this devotional contains a systematic 365-day plan, based on the M’Cheyne Bible-reading schedule, that will in the course of a year guide you through the New Testament and Psalms twice and the rest of the Old Testament once. In an effort to help preserve biblical thinking and living, D. A. Carson has also written thought-provoking comments and reflections regarding each day’s scriptural passages. And, most uniquely, he offers you perspective that places each reading into the larger framework of history and God’s eternal plan to deepen your understanding of his sovereignty—and the unity and power of his Word.

Leading You Back to God

K. Potts @ 2000-05-31

I have read devotionals before but this is the cream of the crop. Dr. Carson points out, "The rising biblical illiteracy in Western culture means that the Bible is increasingly a closed book, even to many Christians (p. 11)." The purpose of this devotional is to get people back to reading the Bible. Carson does this by modifying Robert Murracy M'Cheyne's system of reading the Bible. Carson has four sections to be read for the day of the devotion. Usually these sections are one chapter in length. The first two in italics are for family reading. The devotion of the day comes from one of the family's readings. The other two chapters are for private reading. If a person reads all four chapters including the devotion, he or she will read, "The New Testament and Psalms twice and the rest of the Bible once in a year. Dr. Carson's comments on one of the chapters in italics enlightens the reader on the biblical content of the passage with application for the reader. My wife and I found this service of Dr. Carson invaluable. This is only surpassed by the humbleness of Dr. Carson himself who writes in the introduction, "If you must skip something, skip this book; read the Bible instead (p. 13)." Dr. Carson in his many books as well as being the research professor at Trinity Evangelical Divinty School, wants nothing more than to bring others closer to God, His Word (the Bible), and His living Word, Jesus Christ. This devotional more than accomplishes that feat.

Highly recommended for those who want to get into the Bible.

Other 'devotionals' suffer from being guided by the author in 'what they thought' and can get 'mushy'. Carson keeps our focus in and upon the text of the bible passage for the day, and allows the context of the passage to speak first, then allowing the reader to draw conclusions for application today. I can't wait to get to it everyday - not because it is 'Don Carson', but because it is the Bible, and Don is a great servant in helping me do that. Brilliant.

I bought a copy for every household in my church.

As stated on the dust jacket, this book will "open the Bible to anyone who wants to understand Scriptue in its text and the larger framework of God's kingdom," "know the God of the Bible," and "discover how He works in the world and the lives of those who love Him." To understand the Bible and know the God of the Bible requires regular and extensive reading of the Bible; and a little expert help to keep the general picture in view and navigate the more difficult places is a great advantage. D. A. Carson, of Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, has supplied us with a great tool for growth in Biblical knowledge in his guide for daily reading entitled "For the Love of God." The guide employs the daily reading schedule developed by Robert Murray M'Cheyne (1813-1843), which divides the scriptures into four reading portions per day (two for family worship, two for private reading, morning and evening). By following M'Cheyne's schedule the reader will have completed the Old Testament once and the New Testament and Psalms twice in one year. For each day, Carson has provided a brief, clear, and sound exposition of one or more of the readings. Tremendously helpful.

Rich biblical insights combined with thoughtful applications

Paul @ 1999-05-25

I have been using Carson's book for my devotional material since February and have appreciated the author's mastery of the biblical text as well as his challenging applications for the Christian life. For the Love of God offers a refreshing change from the endless stream of superficial, biblically-barren devotional literature available on the market today.

This Devotional Will Bring To Light The Word of God For You

dr.jbird@juno.com @ 1999-05-27

I have been using this devotional for about 5 months now and I have missed very few days! It is an incredible work indeed. Carson is a master at showing how the entire Bible fits together. The Lord will bless you greatly as Carson, along with the Spirit, open your eyes to eternal truth!

Extremely Gratifying

L. Murry @ 2007-10-17

Carson has wisdom that I was continually surprised with each new devotion. He has an amazing ability to place a chapter in its biblical context, helping the reader understand why it's important. His writing is very well crafted as he puts profound concepts in simple terms. I highly recommend this book for the spiritual edification of all believers and unbelievers alike.

An excellent one-year devotional

D. L. Stelzig @ 2008-01-04

In a day when "devotional" has come to mean lovely thoughts bearing little relationship to the biblical passage, this book challenges, encourages, and draws the reader into the text. Based on Robert Murray McCheyne's one-year reading plan, Carson brings to life one of the four passages read each day. I can't wait to get vol. 2,

Best Devotion Book Ever

Richard J. Worden "H @ 2008-07-20

D.A. Carson has not reinvented the wheel, but has reminded us of a reading plan from the 1800's that guides us through reading the Bible in one year (plus NT and Psalms a second time). His commentary is rich in gaining insight to the whole Bible. I am in third year of using this reading plan and only wish I had started 40 years ago.

Excellent Companion to M'Cheyne's Bible Reading Plan

Jacob Hantla "hantla @ 2010-01-01

For 2010, I will be following M'Cheyne's Bible Reading plan in order to read the Bible in a year. For the Love of God by DA Carson, is a companion devotional commentary to the M'Cheyne's reading plan. The plan covers reading from 4 different places each day (for example today is Gen 1, Ezra 1, Matthew 1, & Acts 1). Carson comments either on how all the readings fit together or sometimes he just picks one or two of the passages to comment on.

In two different previous years (2005 & 2006 I think) I did M'Cheyne's plan and finished both vol 1 and vol 2 of For the Love of God. They are very well done; I am looking forward to another year.

Definitely my daily companion

Mrs McGregor @ 2009-03-22

This Daily guide to reading the Bible through in a year is a definite help in continuing thorough in a consistent manner. For each day, Carson has written comments about one of the four chapters which is a great help in gaining greater understanding. Instead of reading books about the Bible, this guide keeps me in the Bible itself--always a good and blessed thing.

Excellent book, but make sure you buy the right version

J. Mims @ 2009-12-27

My husband and I bought this for each of our kindles. He bought the version that ends with "(Vol 1)" and I bought the version that ends with "Volume 1." My version is missing a few options, the tables for the Bible reading plan do not display properly and the dates are missing from each day's reading. Excellent book so far, but make sure you buy the correct version.

For the Love of God

Mary E. Hughes @ 2011-02-07

This book is very helpful when reading scripture. It helps in relating important details to each other and gives the reader a broader scope in understanding. Also it provides an organized guide to be able to read the entire scripture in one-year's time.

For the Love of God is fantastic!

Devan Foster @ 2010-08-11

I'm enjoying the Carson devotional immensely. It has really dragged me back into the Word, which is what I needed. It's amazing how spiritually complacent a person can get with just reading bits here and there, without an organized plan such as that! This is just what I've needed.

Good Devotional Tool

Andrew Klausen @ 2009-09-13

Dr. Carson says it best in the beginning of this by encouraging users of this book to read their Bibles primarily, and this volume secondarily. I have used other Bible reading plans before and seen their benefits. This reading plan follows the M'Cheyne Reading Calendar, with a minor adaptation, which will have you read through the NT and Psalms twice and the rest of the OT once in a calendar year. Dr. Carson then offers personal insight on any of the four given passages. This isn't an ear itching devotional that will give you today's pop psychology sprinkled with a little Bible. I have found this book to be a good and brief guide that get's you into God's Word and keeps you in it.

Inspiring

C. Hui @ 2007-02-06

Carson has been doing great in explaining God's word, the parallel reading of 4 chapters a time gives us a bigger picture of the context.

Amazing Devotional

Nolan Galido @ 2008-08-14

This has been one of the most inspirational devotional I have read. It is definitely a great tool to use when reading the word of God.

It's now ready for Kindle-- not yet perfect!

Robert McDowell "fer @ 2008-09-23

This is my December 2009 revision of an earlier revision. I hereby give Kindle volume 2 a 4-star rating, up from Kindle Volume 1's 1-star.

BTW, I hear that Dr. Carson is working on volumes 3 and 4. That would give us his commentaries on the entire Bible!

I love the printed versions of the 2 Volumes and would give them 10 stars if I could. My complaints are limited to technical problems with the Kindle versions.

Volume 2 has each daily reading labeled. Hooray! This gives it 4 stars. It would be 5 stars if each reading (or at least month of readings) would be hyperlinked back and forth to the table of contents.

The list of daily readings is still a graphic rather than a true text table. Very unfortunate.

However, the words of this are fantastic, and I am greatly appreciative of the fact that Dr. Carson has put so much of his corpus online via The Gospel Coalition website.

The review below was originally of Volume 1 of the Kindle Version. Volume 1 had the fatal flaw of the daily readings not being labelled! Very cumbersome.
-------------------------------------------
This is a revised review. Mine was the first review posted in the Kindle section for this book. The next day, I found several reviews for PRINTED EDITIONS of this book posted.

Nobody has refuted what I've said about the Kindle version!

---------------------------

I have the printed versions of both volumes
For the Love of God: A Daily Companion for Discovering the Riches of God's Word, Volume 1 and
For the Love of God: A Daily Companion for Discovering the Treasures of God's Word
of this wonderful series of meditations on scripture, whose schedule follows Robert Murray M'Cheyne's through the Bible in a year, and I give THEM 5 stars.

Unfortunately, the Kindle version is a technical disaster.

First, the "schedule" of readings in the front of the book consists of scanned images-- not searchable text. (Some of the images are even crooked!)

Second, each daily meditation is presented WITHOUT its date.

This means that you can't easily find the meditation for a random date. Instead, you need to look at the scanned images near the front of the book and write down the four passages (usually about a chapter each) and do a search (of your entire Kindle collection!) for "Genesis 18" (or whatever).

If the publisher would put the dates with each meditation, that would be a quantum leap forward (to 4 stars!). Give us a text-based schedule of meditations, and I'll give it 5!
