Vision in the Darkness

UltraWill @ 2012-01-12

When I was 10 years old I experienced complete blindness for two weeks following an accident. The prospect of a life without vision has terrified and fascinated me ever since--all the more so when my father was diagnosed with macular degeneration in both eyes. So when I picked up Eye Envy I admit to having experienced a slight pang of voyeuristic guilt. My own vision is now fine, but I wanted to understand--especially as a fellow athlete (Stone is himself a world class para-triathlete)--what it might be like to permanently lose such a fundamental sense. But as I turned the pages, guilt gave way to a real sense of gratitude.

Stone's personal account of a struggle with degenerative eye disease shows that losing his sight has only improved his vision. His stories of others' brave journeys into darkness (or, in some cases, hyper-illuminated forms of blindness) show that he is not alone. All of Stone's subjects are athletes and/or successful professionals who somehow see more clearly for being blind. They're remarkable people--all of them.

This irony of so many blind visionaries was--to me--surprising, inspiring, and a great relief. While these stories all revolve around a profound sense of loss, you'll finish the book with a refreshed understanding of hope, courage, and possibility.

An inspiration

"From your parents you learn love and laughter and how to put one foot before the other. But when books are opened you discover you have wings." Michael Stone certainly has wings and his publication allowed me to borrower them, if only for a few hours. This book will move you.

Michael Stone's own story of perserverance against all odds is inspiration enough, but he went beyond his own personal journey to find other extraordinary people who learn to live with visual impairment. The stories are all moving and insightful. If you face a visual impairment, you'll want to read this book cover to cover for ideas, resources and strength from others. If you are sighted, you'll still find this book a wonderful journey through the lives of people who found creative ways to overcome monumental challenges. If you like page turners, you'll love this book. If you're an athlete -- or just someone with dreams -- you'll understand the true meeting of achieving what you never thought was possible.

I found Michael Stone's book to be inspirational. He did an incredible job of capturing not only his own story but those of others dealing with vision loss in an uplifting and well written manner. This book is helpful to those dealing with physical handicaps as well as those who do not. The realization of what people can do with limitations is truly amazing!

I myself do not live with vision loss, but I know someone who does. Michael Stone is a passionate advocate, educational resource and leader in changing the future for people living with this condition. This book will inspire and motivate anyone coping with degenerative blindness, as it provides real solutions for living a successful and meaningful life, despite what may seem to be something to stop life in its tracks. It will also give people who are living along side those with vision loss empathy, and tools to help this cause in their own right. Michael, keep up the good work!

Must read and motivating

This book offers an inspiring read for all types of readers, either with a disability or not. The author writes about a variety of persons who have accepted vision loss and overcome this supposed "negative" and taken the reigns to live life to its fullest. I have reread certain sections of the book about people who I have found motivate me to not get down.

For many of us, we can't fathom losing our vision. I see this book as a way to stay focused on what is important for myself and not to let obstacles keep me from what I enjoy doing. The author did a great job in instilling this message.
