Ace Jones needs a vacation, but she's not going to get it. What she gets instead is a good dose of scandalous small town politics that takes her on a wild quest for truth and redemption. Things get really complicated when the love of her life, who she hasn’t seen or heard from in over three years, shows up and vows not to leave town until she agrees to marry him. Diary of a Mad Fat Girl is adventurous and entertaining as Ace and her friends delve into illegal surveillance, stalking, and covert operations in a strip club.

A fun story

Aly-oops! @ 2011-01-31

This wasn't really a romance as much as a "girlfriends" tale. The story is about Graciela (Ace), Lilly, & Chloe and is told from Ace's POV.

POTENTIAL SPOILERS:

All work at the local school of a small town, & the book starts off with a bang when Lilly is accused of having an affair with an 18yo student. Chloe is married to a cheating, abusive, upstanding member of the community (Richard). And Ace is a size 16, cynical, & missing the man (Mason) she left 3 years ago. The story revolves mostly around Ace & Lilly as they stalk Chloe's husband in an effort to prove he's cheating, hopefully providing Chloe with enough motivation to divorce him. Unexpected assistance comes in the form of an elderly, wealthy woman, Mrs. Gloria Peacock.

Between pulling guns on abusive, cheating husbands, dressing like drag queens to infiltrate titty bars, being arrested a couple times, & obtaining photo evidence of her evil boss' "extra-curricular" activities, Ace is in for a pretty raucous good time. This books is fun & fast-paced. Definitely worth reading!

I opted to rate this only 4 stars mainly because of how the relationship between Ace & her man is left. They never actually resolve the issues surrounding their initial break-up of three years prior, yet they're all happy & peachy-keen by the end. Even though the story doesn't revolve around the romance, it still left a bad taste in my mouth, especially since the book ended on a romantic note. Mason should've answered Ace's concerns, & Ace shouldn't have been so easily placated. Simple enough.

All-in-all, this book is great & totally worth 99 cents. Enjoy!

Were We Reading the Same Book?

S. Vogt @ 2011-02-12

I have to wonder what those who gave this book 5 stars were thinking. It was a marginal effort at best. I downloaded it because it was 99 cents and the reviews promised that it was a well written and witty book. While the part about it being 99 cents held true, it certainly wasn't well written or witty. The domestic violence (and subsequent revenge violence) plot line was anything but funny. It also wasn't a dramatic tale that had me begging for more. The book as a whole was just...there. Meh. The constant use of profanities certainly didn't make me want to keep reading, nor did the poorly developed characters and the barely there plot. Not worth the few hours it took to read, even if it was 99 cents.

And please, for the love of grammar, someone teach this author the difference between "your" and "you're!"

Outstanding debut!

HappyMom @ 2011-02-01

Well, my entire family is questioning my sanity because I've spent the evening laughing (OK, cackling wildly) while reading this book. While I agree with the reviewer who wished the relationship between Ace and Mason had been fleshed-out a bit more, I still feel compelled to give this debut effort 5 stars for the hilarious character dialogue and first-person narrative alone. G.R.I.T.S., especially, will appreciate the colloquialisms and references to places and things dear to our hearts (like the Redneck Riviera). I look forward to reading more from this author!

Funny

Annie B "booksrule" @ 2011-03-09

While admittedly this is an obvious first novel attempt and could have used a good editor to clean up some of the problems and, yes, the language, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Many times I found myself laughing and that is always a good thing for me.

What makes this a 4-star book to me rather than a 3-star one is that I did enjoy the fast-paced story and feel it is worth overlooking some problems. I really liked the main character's voice, and, again, the book did make me laugh.

If you're in the mood for something quick, light, amusing with a happy ending, you could do a lot worse than this book. I hope to see more from this author and her work as it matures.

Overall, a good first effort.

No proofreaders??

P. Ficere "Manna" @ 2011-03-09

The book is funny and light and I found myself laughing out loud. However, there were so many misspellings and other typos, it tarnished the reading experience.

Diary of a Mad Reader

k @ 2011-03-13

This is quite possibly the worst book I have ever tried to read. I downloaded it for a what I thought would be a light and fluffy read for my train ride but what I began to read was so horrible and so horribly written that I could not get past the first few pages. I did not have a lot of expectations for 99 cents but this was not worth the change.

Not funny at all

GMbienlire @ 2011-04-09

I was looking forward to being entertained by this book that most reviewers called funny. I found instead insufferable (even if sketchy)characters balancing between low self-esteem and self-absorption. Contrary to what the author seems to think, constant swearing doesn't suffice to add humor to this book that cruelly lacks any.

Read in one night!

Aware @ 2011-04-03

Okay, so I'm a nut about spelling and when I see a typo in a book, I'm automatically turned off by it and I quit reading. However, I only counted them as I went (I noticed 4) but I kept on reading. I'm going through a stressful time in my life and I needed a pick-me-up. This book did just that! It kept me smiling the entire way through. I didn't like the sex outside of marriage though. I just skimmed past the references to get through the comments. I noticed negative reviews about this book and I honestly cannot understand the reasoning. Other than perhaps, they are coming from bored individuals that like to have 'opinions'. Here's mine. It's worth your time! :) Even with the 4 typos and the out-of-marriage sex. I still really liked this author. I would definitely read another book of hers. That's actually why I'm leaving a review about this book. I came onto Amazon because I need something to read and was looking forward to another book from this individual. Unfortunately, I see none.

Diary of a Mad Fat Girl

A Customer @ 2011-02-22

Silly book. Amusing if a girl smart-talking her employer, her best friend and others is what you like. Serious topics of domestic violence and anger management issues are overshadowed by juvenile antics and "tough talk". Maybe McAfee's sequel could be "Mad Fat Girl Gets Therapy". When Ace started calling her boyfriend's penis a "cucumber" she lost me. I'd characterize this as beach/vacation trash reading.

So wish could have gone 3 1/2 stars

C Mayfair @ 2011-03-09

Overall I liked this story. It was fun, interesting with a few fun characters. Kind of hard to like the heroine, she seems a little too full of her own bavado for her own good. I have two main issues, the irritating overuse of overthought similes, or maybe too many adjectives in general. You would have to read it to see what I mean. And I reget to say that even though this is a work of ficton, a domestic "situation" would never pan out that way. Anyway, for the price it's worth it.

Very Funny

snappsgirl89 @ 2011-03-05

I have never laughed so hard while reading a book til this! All I can say is you have the right kind of sense of humor while reading it. I laughed so hard at one point I had tears streaming down my face!! Very good and a quick read! Was well worth the 99 cents, I spent! Now, I need to see if she has written anything else!

Loved it!!

T.Murphy @ 2011-03-03

This is the first book I purchased on my new Kindle and I loved it!! I was laughing out loud almost the whole time and I seriously could not put it down. I hope there are more books to come from Stephanie because I will definitely be purchasing them!!!

What can I say?

pamela @ 2011-04-13

I really don't know if is because i've just red five books of Marie Force that were SOOOOO AMAZING, don't know if I did not understand the jokes, but at the 70% of the book on my kindle,I just said to myself THAT'S ENOUGHT! Sorry I really didn't like it!

Why All the Low Reviews?

Internetjunkie495 @ 2011-03-21

I personally did not understand the reviews giving this book only 1 or 2 stars. You bought a book for 99 cents and you expect Jane Austin? To those reviewers I say: Get over yourselves. If you think you can do better, show me the money.

First of all, I applaud Ms. McAfee for having the courage to self publish. So what if there are syntax errors or missing words? Anyone who's ever proofread their own documents knows that you almost always miss something.

Secondly, this story is hysterical! I'm sure more than one person thought I was a raving lunatic while I was reading it because I kept laughing out loud. Ms. McAfee's use of colorful metaphors reminded me a lot of my Dad's off the wall Southern expressions so I was completely at ease with the language.

As for the domestic abuse issue, I don't recall a single instance where the writer pokes fun at spousal abuse or makes light of it. The only problem I had was how neatly tied up that situation ended and how the abused turned the tables on the abuser. I certainly can't remember any cases in real life where it turned out that well.

Likewise, the ending is too "happily ever after" but the rest of the book made up for the conclusion.

For 99 cents, this is a hell of a bargain and a great first effort by the author.

Too Funny!

J3J3Real @ 2011-03-16

You know I saw some of the 1 star reviews and I wanted to ask them what book were they reading? I don't agree that Stephanie was trying to bash on domestic violence. Heck I don't know about you all but there are plenty of times that there are people out there like the Richard Stacks who we would all like to handle like how Ace handled him in the hospital. Shoot, I was rooting her on. Someone needed to put him in his place. Okay, so I'm off of my soap box. I loved the book I laughed all the way through and oh the way she treats her supervisor is too hilarious too. I kept saying why can't I do that??? lol can't wait see if she rights a sequel or another book.

died laughing but needs a new editor

Geri Kern @ 2011-03-07

I don't know if there was a glitch in cyber space while my book was downloading but it was difficult to read. I was constantly having to rework the grammar in my head to make sense of it. Someone definately needs an English class, the wrong forms of words drove me crazy!!

On the up side. When I got past the physical words on the page it was hysterical. I laughed so hard my daughter came running to find out if I was ok. Loved it!! It's a shame about the editing.

Fun story!

Dfg281 "dfg281" @ 2011-02-18

I really enjoyed this book! The characters were fun and did things I wish I could get away with! I hope there are more books to follow.

Always read a sample before buying.

Comdys @ 2011-03-07

If I had read a few pages before buying this book I would have known immediately that it's lack of sophistication would irk me. The book is amusing and I did actually laugh twice. However, the plot, scripted dialect, and the resolution of the abused subject's problems and the protagonist's love life are simply improbable. Laws are broken, characters are arrested with no believable consequences, and the "happily ever after" themes are sophomoric. Portrayal of the professional aspects of the principal and teachers is so far fetched that I felt cheated by the writer because she didn't offer any reasonable or believable consequences. This book is a farce and might make a successful play plot if that play were intended as a farce. Shame on me for not reading a sample before buying! I don't recall if this book was free or 99 cents, but the book was a waste of my time. Definitely not in a league with "the First Wives' Club" or "Fried Green Tomatoes."

Waste of money, waste of time

Leslie Olson "Mom of @ 2011-03-09

I can't believe anyone gave this more than one star! This book is horribly written, and is so overful with metaphors (".....like a _____ on/with a/to a ________") that is sounds like a bad stand up routine. Even with the amount of free time i have, and how much i love to read, i consider this book to be the biggest waste of time. This author should think of exploring realistic story lines, instead of far-fetched fantasy. I love how the old woman in the story just happened to have her house wired up to spy on the whole town, along with millions of dollars of spy gear. Don't bother with it, and don't waste even 1mb in your kindle with this piece of garbage!

Devoured in one sitting

VAKindleAddict @ 2011-03-20

I could not put this book down! It was fast-paced, funny, and overall entertaining. Sure, some of the aspects of the plot were a little over the top, but that is what made it so fun to read. The characters I was meant to like, I liked, and the characters I was meant not to like, I hated. I was rooting for Ace and her friends all the way through, and definitely recommend this book to others.

distracting!

Christin Slough @ 2011-03-14

This book was distracting in a good way and in a bad way. On a positive note, the book was light, funny and entertaining... So distracting in a good way! But, the editing was awful... I'm just a normal every day gal and there were so many typographical and grammar errors that I almost put it down a couple of times. It was so hard to really enjoy the fun little story that was being created because the myriad of errors take you out of the moment. In this day and age, I cannot even begin to imagine how a book makes it to being published with so many elementary errors. I officially offer my services to the publishers of this book to edit their next one. I will do it really really cheap!

Fun, Funny

Carole A. Spalino @ 2011-02-27

I loved the crazy antics the girls pulled off in this book. No glamour queens or beauty pageant winners here, but just normal women doing crazy things. Reading this was a blast! It reminded me of my friends and me when we were younger. I thought the book was a page-turner since there was always something going on.

Not worth my time!

Phoebee Tree @ 2011-04-07

The title sounds catchy. I like chick-lit. The price is right, but this book is just wrong, wrong, wrong. Poor grammar, poor spelling, poor dialogue, poor plot and characterization. Too much profanity!

I joke about reading trashy novels, you know the kind: fun, witty, maybe a little sexy, with little or no socially redeeming value, but this is just trash. I didn't waste money on this book, but I wasted time! Amazon, I feel cheated! I feel betrayed!

Amazon, I've ordered so many wonderful books from you. Over the years I have come to rely on you for those brown boxes filled with great books! Lately I got all of Jane Austen with just a few clicks!! How can you offer up this tripe? Even at free, this book is too expensive!

I must have missed something...

M. Garrett @ 2011-04-05

I thought this was an ebook, a whole story. Turned out it was just a five minute read that just stopped. No ending, just stopped.

Don't waste your time.

I truly enjoyed Ace and her shenanigans with her friends. I think I need to read more from this funny gal...keep writing Stephanie!

Love this book!

AmyM @ 2011-01-18

This book is great! It will make you laugh from the beginning to the end. It is so well written that you can just see and feel the characters. I think everyone wishes they could be like Ace she will tell you what she thinks. Ha This is a funny and great book definetly worth the price!

Filled with typos!!!

sunnyday11 @ 2011-03-28

The story line is so-so .... not a horrible story to read, somewhat entertaining and pretty mindless reading if that's what you're looking for. However, the typos in this book drive me CRAZY!!!! On every other page there are words mis-spelled, words are used incorrectly, punctuation is used incorrectly or missing entirely - it truly is annoying. This book was clearly not edited or proofread. No wonder why it was only .99 cents on Kindle. I'm not sure if I can continue reading it because there are so many typos. Shame on the author.

Tromping. Sparkling. Sniggering. Clicking. Whipsering.

Elly Sparks @ 2011-02-10

Let's start with the good. It's 99 cents. And for 99 cents, it might appeal to you. Now, that being said, it was not a good book for ME.
I ended up not finishing this book. I think the author was going in the right direction, and she really had me hooked with the sample - I had to know: WHY DID LILLY get fired?
I read (and appreciate) new authors pricing books at 99 cents. No doubt some authors will command more some day soon.
What makes a new (indie?) author stand out from all the other new authors is if they keep the use of adjectives to a minimum. For awhile, I couldn't quite put my finger on what the difference was between the work of a best selling author and an indie author - and then I had a conversation about Nicolas Sparks with someone and the light bulb shattered my brain!
What I don't like about Sparks is his use of cliches and adjectives. Granted, I only read The Notebook, but that was enough to turn me off forever.
Indie authors seem to gravitate toward overusing adjectives.
She tromped down the hallway. Her sparkling eyes lit the room. She's giving me the saucer eye stare. She sniggered. And if I had a penny for each time the word whisper was used in Diary Of A Mad Fat Girl, Bill Gate's would be asking ME for a loan.
I understand the main character is "mad" but the constant use of the F word started to grate on my nerves. It quickly went from humorous anger to OH, NOT THIS AGAIN. Ace went from sarcastic to psyco in the span of a few chapters.
Like I said, not for me. But if you like Sparks and the overuse of adjectives doesn't bother you as a reader, you'll probably like this book.

Too many typos

Belinda Ebert @ 2011-05-17

I couldn't get past the typos and grammatical errors. Because of that, I feel that 0.99 was too much to pay for the book. The editor should be ashamed!

Not my thing.

ChickLitThis @ 2011-05-14

I stopped reading. The typos, the grammatical errors, the too much telling, the too light handling of domestic violence. But it was the main character that finally did it for me. The title forewarns us--she's angry. It got old, though. Without balancing that with something empathetic, something softer and vulnerable, she becomes unlikable. Really unlikable.

The bad part? This is all easily tweakable. Were that done, this would have been a five star for me.

Diary of a Mad Fat Girl

Janis Kisman @ 2011-05-09

I thought the book was fun and entertaining. Only problem I has was the language. The main character is a teacher and why she had to be so crude was beyond me. Less is more, you know what I mean?

Fast and Fun Read

MsFitz @ 2011-05-05

I totally enjoyed reading this book! I could not lay it down! I laughed and cried, both. The story line was fast and totally interesting. It was fun and at the same time very, very serious. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a fast and interesting read. Some parts were a little over the top, but for the most part I totally enjoyed becoming friends with "Ace". Good read.

Very poor

R. Pohl "Ruth Pohl" @ 2011-04-24

I slogged through about 70% of this book and finally gave up. The characters yell instead of converse. Bizarre events apparently are meant to substitute for plot and character development. The National Enquirer is more entertaining....and believable.

Fun read

M. C. Dumouchel @ 2011-04-17

I LOVED this book. Couldn't put it down. (Finished reading it at 3AM on a Friday night). 'Ace' is funny and intelligent and a bit of a drama queen and shows how important it is to have REAL friends to count on. I'm a fan of chick lit, feel-good & easy reads and I was well-served with this book. Can't wait to read McAfee's next book :)

Diary of a Mad Fat Woman

younyce @ 2011-04-16

I am currently working a job with a significant male influence that I am incapable of escaping. This book was exactly what I needed. There were many "laugh out loud" moments that only a woman would understand. If you want to read a book that is entertaining and fun, this is the one. Ace's honesty is somewhat refreshing and there were moments and comments made that I could see transpiring between my friends and me. This book is for fun! I truly enjoyed it and have recommended it to friends. So far, the friends who have followed my recommendations not only enjoyed it, but like me, couldn't put it down!

Made me laugh out loud.

Shannan @ 2011-04-15

The adventures of Ace Jones and her slightly out-there set of friends were both laugh-out-loud funny and heartwarming. It is definitely a feel-good novel, especially for those of us who know that crazy isn't always a bad thing.

Couldn't stop reading!!

luv2read324 @ 2011-04-14

I got this book FREE and sometimes those books can be really bad. This one was totally not one of those books! From the beginning I loved it, I didn't want it to end! Will definitely get another book from this author!!

Hilarious, witty, and sassy.....A must read!!!

Brittany @ 2011-04-13

I had no idea what to expect when i purchased this book for .99, but for the price I figured it was worth a try, and I am sooooooooooo happy that I did! This book was super cute. It was full of witty humor and sassy statements, all together it was funny as hell! The dialogue between the characters will make u giggle throughout the entire book. Sometimes the grammer, or lack there of, will get annoying, but over all the book is worth reading through. It was enjoyable to see how this book was such a "real-life story", it was one of those books where while you're reading you have to stop and say, "OMG that is sooo something i would have said or done". While this book may not be for everyone, with the abuse one of the friends, a whished to be violent revenge from all the girlfriends , and constant profanity (which I believe fit this book just right) this book was laugh out loud funny! For .99 give it a try, I think you will be pleasently surprised!!!!

Hilarious, Laugh out Loud Fun

Katrie @ 2011-04-09

I actually bought this book based on the title alone and the price didn't hurt either. :) It turned out to be a great story about friendship and the things us girls will do for our best friends!!! It was actually a quick read and I would recommend it to anyone. This for all women who have done some crazy things in the name of friendship and still have those close friends around to share those memories.

Good read

Tina B @ 2011-04-06

This book was an enjoyable read. It is not some deep book that teaches you the meaning of life so if that is what you are looking for it is not for you. It touches on domestic violence but that is not what the book is about. I do not know what others that gave it a low review was thinking they were buying but it is meant to be a comical book about girl power and the power of friendship. It was a fun read.

JUST FOR LAUGHS

leabrad @ 2011-03-31

I bought the book because of the price. I recommend this book because it's hilarious. Granted the grammar and readability is at times awkward but if you need to relax and have a good laugh you can find lots to laugh about in this story. I see much of myself in Ace and her snide remarks so I found the book hilarious and have recommended it to several friends.

Funny, appealing and outrageous!

Midnight_moody "midn @ 2011-03-29

This was a great, fast read that had me laughing out loud! Considering the price and the title, I wasn't expecting Homer's The Iliad. I did get an amusing story about a fat chick that reminded me a lot of...ME! I may not talk to my boss like that, but you can bet your sweet canary, I'm probably thinking it. I'm educated and like to read a wide variety of book categories, but it's not a sin to enjoy a fluffy bit of fun. And it's certainly ok for the good guy to win once in awhile. I'm looking forward to another installment from Stephanie McAfee. Typos and all.

Eh...

bookworm @ 2011-03-25

The book truly is laugh out loud funny. Too bad it's poorly written with a threadbare plot. Like another reviewer stated, the constant use of metaphors was as overdone as a burnt hot dog on the grill (I couldn't resist - now imagine having those throughout the entire book). If she could tap into her humor more, find a decent storyline and lay off the metaphors, she could be a truly fun author.

Total Escapism

txeggplant "txeggpla @ 2011-03-19

Now, I can't say that everything in this book is totally out of the realm of possible things I have done but for the most part, this book is just total escapism fun.

I especially liked the relationship between Ace and Lilly, her prim-on-the-outside best friend.

All in all, this book reminded me of an I Love Lucy episode, only set in the South where, as Julia Sugarbaker pointed out, no one ever asks if you have crazy people in your family ... They just ask what side they're on :)

great spring\summer read :-)

This book was HYSTERICAL!!! I've been waiting for a funny laugh out loud book and got lucky when I bought this for my Nook for 99 cents. I hope Stephanie has more books like this. While reading this I kept thinking this needs to be made into a movie and I had the actors already in my head. Can't wait for book 2 possibly or a movie. FANTASTIC!!!!

Unexpected

sepemb85 @ 2011-03-16

LOVED IT!!

I thought this book was hilarious. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a laugh. The storyline was cute and it was only .99 cents!

Funny moments, but....

Texas Playwright Chi @ 2011-03-03

There is no question that there are some funny moments in this book, and that Stephanie McAfee has a future as a successful writer. I'm enjoying the book for the most part, however I keep thinking that the character of Ace is inconsistent...and honestly, I can't totally put my finger on it. But, it has to do with she describes herself as one way, but behaves and 'is' another way - it doesn't match for me. I'm only 77% done with the read, and have been teetering on not finishing. I actually stopped reading to read another book, my attention just got drawn away. But, I do want to try and finish it and I'll update my review at that time - and will hopefully have a better grip on what's bugging me here. Still, I will say, there are some great laughs here.
