The Cloud Collector's Handbook

C. Green "BOOKOO" @ 2009-08-30

I was looking for a way to connect with my 10 yr old grandson. This book
has been just the thing. We have been able to use the book to gain points as
we "collect" different types and formations of clouds. We compare notes and meet
at McDonalds to discuss and see what we have collected. I have learned alot about
clouds and have come to appriciate them more. The book is well written and the
pictures are great. There is even a "cloud" web site to go to. Share a cloud
with your children or grandchildren. It's fun!!

What a delight!

Who would have thought that you could get so much enjoyment out of a little book about clouds? I got this as a gift and am completely enchanted. I thought I already knew a lot about clouds but this book has taught me so much! In particular, I knew the major groups, but there are dozens of cloud varieties that I am learning to recognize. Fun fun fun!

At last! Somewhere to put all those clouds

Mark Allerton @ 2010-08-07

This little handbook is a great extension from the Cloud Spotter's Guide. It is compact and robust enough to cart around with you, and has the same wit and concise information that made our Founder's guide so enjoyable. It suggests that as you accumulate clouds, you can take photos of them, and link the notes to the photos. This will allow us to compete aggressively with other cloud spotters in amassing beautiful and exotic clouds. I have only just started, but I think this is going to turn me into a cloud connoisseur. The photo examples in the book are very clear, and it has an image index at the back to help you work out what has taken your fancy.

More then a Helpful Handbook

Grady Harp @ 2011-05-29

Yes, this book was intended to be a handbook to register cloud sightings, a method of identifying clouds by their configurations, and a means to tech not only youngsters but also interested adults the fascinating formations that water and air and sun and moon can create with enough ongoing similarity that they an be classified.

But there is another aspect to this book by Gavin Pretor-Pinney that makes it so special, and that is the fact that it contains some 150 splendid photographs of could formations discussed. These photographs, the courtesy of many photographers around the world, are dramatic and could easily be in a stand-alone book of images as a cloud monograph. So combining the adventure of cloud collection with Pretor-Pinney as guide and consultant together with these world class photographs in rich color makes this a book that would be a welcome addition to the library of anyone who spends time gazing upward - 'Out on the lawn I lie in bed...'(Auden). Now I see the clouds

rusalka @ 2011-07-16

I saw this in the NY Times and some of the cloud pictures at nytimes online so I recommended it to our kids who have 2 boys 9 yrs & 11 yrs. They took it on a family camping trip to the Florida panhandle, then loaned it to us for a sailing trip (our first sailing trip) in the Virgin Islands. We saw cloud formations we had never seen before--and could identify them! Neat book for any outdoors person or someone like us--retired folks with an apartment balcony and lots of sky.

Cute Book

Stephanie @ 2011-04-21

This is a cute collectors book about collecting clouds. The beauty is you leave them in the sky but mark down in the book when you have seen certain clouds, like birdwatching.

Excellent little book!

Great little book (fits in your coat pocket!). Well written with nice explanations and a great sense of fun and humor, as anyone looking in the clouds would probably appreciate. I like that there is a spot where you can jot down an image file name for each type of cloud if you take a picture of one. Now, go buy this book and start collecting clouds!

Great!!

I am a member of 'The Cloud Appreciation society' so this book is particularly welcome and incredibly useful for me. Not only does it contain excellent photographs of clouds but, it has pages for cloud spotting information entry date, location etc. The book is small enough to be easily portable in pocket or ruck sack and is a sturdy hard cover design. An Excellent handbook for all of us who love clouds.

Some people just like to know the names of things.
If you are one of these people, you will be able to name all the clouds you see.

To Cloudwatch is to dream...

EllenBronx @ 2011-03-28

This is a wonderful little book. If you ever spent time lying on the grass, looking at clouds in the sky then this books is for you. If you're not the dreamy type of person, then you can think of this book as how clouds talk to us about weather conditions. This book is a little gem!

Terrific Cloud Book!

Jef @ 2011-09-13

Tons of information, delivered in an entertaining, extremely readable style. Tongue-in-cheek captions for some photos lend a very personal, approachable tone to the information. Absolutely anyone would enjoy this book since the subject matter is so universal and likable, even if you have no particular interest in meteorology or science. And yet you can't avoid learning something new every time you pick it up, even if briefly. Highly recommended!

Keep looking up!

C. J. Fuller @ 2011-08-13

If you are at all interested in clouds, this is the book for you. It is written as a field guide for clouds, and includes the precise names for the different types of clouds and information about the conditions under which different types of clouds form. The book is beautifully illustrated by photos sent in by members of the Cloud Appreciation Society, which was founded by the author. If you are a painter, there are some great references here. If you home school your kids, this would make a good resource for weather, art or water segments. The book includes space to notate which clouds you've seen so you can "collect" clouds, and describes and illustrates some of the rarer forms. I'm a confirmed cloud watcher, and this book has photos of formations I've never seen before. The author has an entertaining voice, and provides just enough information without bogging down into dry facts. In short, it's fun. Great price, too.

Lovely & Witty

I'll be brief - I love this book. It's sweet, witty and informative. The perfect size for tucking into a back pack or picnic basket, you'll want to buy two and give one as a gift to your favorite dreamer or budding scientist.

Clouds

Alexandra Fitzsimmon @ 2011-06-25

This is the type of book that makes you look at clouds in a different way, every day. You can look up the current cloud formation and record it in the book.
It's also just fun to look at various clouds. Some clouds are quite rare.
It's also small enough to carry around.
It would be great if they would build a cloud app.

The sun isn't everything.

Judith Greenbaum @ 2011-05-10

This book has brought me and my partner much pleasure. We keep the book in our car because we can see many more cloud formations than at home. The photographs are spectacular, the explanations are clear and interesting. My only complaint was that I wanted a book that could help me predict the weather and this book doesn't do that. However, in his description of the clouds the author does include some information that could be used in a general way to help predict the weather. This book is a small gem.

Something new to collect

mphillips @ 2011-05-10

Who knew there so many kinds of clouds or that they could be so interesting? And competitive? This tiny handbook has given me a whole new perspective on the sky. Fascinating. Amateur cloud collecting is the perfect hobby for someone who has everything.

Scan the horizon

James P. Cobb @ 2011-07-12

I've always enjoyed looking at sunrises and sunsets, seeing storms roll in and watching the moon peek through the clouds. As of a few days ago, I can honestly say I enjoy them even more. What a great, little book! It's full of stunning images. It's concisely written. It's humorous in parts too. I've identified several of the more common clouds so far and I look forward to the day when I identify a fogbow, crepuscular ray and fallstreak hole and other less-common atmospheric phenomena.

wonderful book!

Barbara J. Carr @ 2011-06-06

I gave this book as a gift; the recipient loved it. Beautiful photographs and lively text. Take it for a drive across the desert or anytime you can relax and enjoy the clouds.

One Cloudy Day

Susan @ 2011-06-03

I gave this to my husband for his Birthday. He absolutely loves this book. He never realized how many different kinds of clouds there were and he loved seeing the different names.

A handy little book

Barclay @ 2012-03-07

As an outdoor enthusiast, the concept of the book appealed to me. Bought 2 copies and loved it! The smaller size makes it easy to take with you when you venture out. Very informative about how each type of cloud materializes, great pictures, too! Thought it was well organized. It exeeded my expectations so much that I bought 2 more copies and have given a total of 3 away as gifts. I want everyone I know to have a copy!

November's No Longer My Least Favorite Month

Lightman @ 2012-03-06

It used to be.

It gets dark early.

It's cold and rainy.

No snow yet.

Then I noticed something new. November has the most amazing skies. Weather flies through at warp speed. It's always changing. And the clouds are different, more dynamic than at any other time of year.

This beautiful little book helps you track and make sense of it all.

The author, Gavin Pretor-Pinnney, is the founder of The Cloud Appreciation Society, a global organization opposed to "blue sky thinking". I bet he likes November too.

The format of the book is that of a guide and journal for collectors, with ample and beautiful photography, scientific notes that are engagingly written, and spaces for the collector to document observations. Even though it sounds kind of weird, it really isn't. It's actually a lot of fun just to leaf through, even if you're not planning a collection.

Trust me. November will never be the same again...

Information & Handbook-NOT great cloud photos

pen name @ 2011-08-04

The title of the book describes what it is-a handbook with small photos of clouds, made to record sightings of various types of clouds which are described. The book is small sized so easy to carry around. Would be nice for kids with scientific interests. I bought the book unseen, hoping for gorgeous cloud photos, so it was not what I wanted.
