kindle your own adventure

A. H. "A. H." @ 2010-12-17

I discovered, after purchasing the kindle version, that this game is also availble in iTunes for iPhones, the touch, and iPad. Normally, I'd be upset that I wasn't aware of the other platforms before purchasing this because the kindle is not a gaming device; however, this seems like a choose your own adventure book and the kindle will allow the player to use more of their imagination more like traditional choose your own adventure books, as a graphic rich version would interfere with the player creating their own images, (but, there do seem to be some illustrations). I haven't played much of this, but enough to think it's overpriced at $4.99. So far, the game has offered some interesting choices, enough to keep me curious enough to play through more the next time I can't sleep. If you're nostalgic for choose your own adventure books this is a worthwhile purchase but, I'd wait for it to be $0.99.

Too little content

GreenWeaver @ 2010-12-21

This game is fun, but ends too quickly. For $5, I expected a lot more content... I completed it 3 times in 3 different ways in less than an hour.

This brings back memories...

J. L. Callahan "Book @ 2010-12-26

I always loved CYOA stories as a kid, so this let me relive my childhood a little. The difference, though, is that you get to customize almost everything about your dragon self (Name, scale color, gender, etc.)! Your stats change depending on how you handle a situation and those same stats can determine the amount of success for an action you pick (I had enough Disdain to ignore an effigy, but not enough Cunning to create a perfect magical trap to protect my hoard). This was quite fun, and I can't wait to 'play' it again.

EDIT: Please note, this is a role-playing story. While I love this kind of thing, your results may vary. It IS a little on the short side for a $5 price tag on the first run-through, but I think the replay potential for different endings makes up for it.

Entertaining

Knitfan @ 2010-12-18

I have not played this long but so far, I think it is fun and entertaining. The writing is witty and the choices you make can result in unexpected twists and turns which makes it more interesting. I think it is worth $4.99.

Fun and easy diversion

A Customer @ 2010-12-25

This is a fun game to play that I would recommend to anyone who loves choose-your-own-adventure books. Your choices affect the gameplay to a degree though the overall story progresses to a similar end regardless of the choices you make. I first discovered this game online at the Choice of Games website where it can be played for free, but I gladly purchased it for my Kindle so I can play on the go. I only gave it 4 stars though because, while enjoyable, this game lacks the depth and complexity of other games available from this company and others.

Interesting & Good For a Giggle At Times

JwB "BookBuddy" @ 2011-02-11

I had played this game online so when I saw it on kindle for an inexpensive price, I had to get it.

This isn't classic literature put into game form. Nor is it something designed to tax your brain. It's a cute little interactive game where you are a dragon and the choices with each turn decide ultimately whether you end the game poverty stricken, lonely and with no tasty princesses to chow down on or wealthy, with a mate and a supply of plump juicy royalty to nosh on at your leisure.

It's cute, it has part that make me laugh and it passes a few minutes. Plus, I have a 16 year old son who is mentally challenged and he can play this which is a major added bonus as so many of the games take strategy and logic skills. This one just involves making choices in questions and he loves it and it makes him laugh. For that, I'd have paid much more.

An Amusing Diversion

P. Murawski @ 2011-01-17

This is a "Choose Your Own Adventure"-type game with some roleplaying elements. You play as a dragon through a number of scenarios on your way to dominating the lands around you. The game keeps track of your stats, such as your brutality, cunning, and vigilance, and these stats are determined based on your choices throughout the game. At the end, you are presented with a summary including your "character sheet."

The story itself is humorous and enjoyable, and I had a lot of fun the first time I went through it. It was an entertaining diversion and worth the $0.99 sale price. However, I don't think it has enough replay value to be worth its full price. The second playthrough was not nearly as interesting and I probably won't play it again.

This kind of interactive fiction is a great idea though, and I would love to see more intricate and involved stories like this one.

A very cool game

A Customer @ 2011-01-16

I recently got this game, and I have already played it three times. Every time, it ended differently. You have to make wise choices on what you do, and that changes what happens. The endings got better for me every time I played. I think it was because I learned what could happen if I made a certain choice, and decided to try something different every time. This a really fun and unique game, and I think that it is worth the money. I would recomend getting it while it is on sale through January 31.

I really like how you can chooese your own life and all the different options, the only thing I dont like is how little content comes with it but i got it on sale for 99 cents. I thimk this is a pretty good deal.

It's Ok

Brandon Zarzyczny "B @ 2011-02-14

It's ok, not good but not bad. It's very short, and the writing is pretty amateurish with very limited choices. I got it for a buck and played with it for an hour or two.

AMAZING GAME!!!!!!

CL @ 2011-02-10

This Game is so much fun. Becase you choose how you want your dragon. If you want dragon to be nice or mean. You also can tell what your dragon looks like. It also tells you how many wounds you got. I am not going to tell you all about because I have to tell one bad thing. The bad part of is that it's a little short. Buts it is super fun.

Choice of the Dragon--Really fun, highly entertaining

Eleanor Reeds @ 2011-01-15

My eleven-year-old and I have had a lot of fun with this game since purchasing it yesterday--we've been able to conjure up several different stories based on the choices we've made. It's quite entertaining and well written, and definitely worth the 99 cent sale price. It took about 20 minutes to complete the first time, and less after that (unless you hit a new screen, you already know what's happening and thus don't have to read as carefully). Short, yes, but it's a good length for this sort of thing--you want to get through to see what happens and then start over again anyway, right? (Or I do, at least...)

If you're looking for a carbon copy of those Choose Your Own Adventure books from the 1980s, this probably isn't going to be for you--it's just a different ball game, you see, using an eReader. But! If you're looking for a creative game appropriate for whole family (um, I used my daughter as an excuse to buy this, even though it's mostly for me), then this is for you. Highly recommend.

Versatile & Fun

Lasciel @ 2011-04-24

This is a fun little game. You get to design your own dragon and play through various fantasy dragon scenarios. I really thought some of the story option writing was top-notch, and one thing I really enjoyed was the ability to examine your motivations for your choices and have them reflect in the gameplay. Many quizzes and choose-your-own games/stories will give you a choice, and then give you a result that doesn't match your motivation.

For instance, if you take a political quiz online and answer that you support legalizing marijuana, the quiz may infer that you are liberal, or support drug use. But a person could have chosen that because they believe marijuana kills, and they think all hippies should die. That person should get a very different political result than someone that thinks marijuana use is harmless and encourageable :)

The ability to sometimes explain the reasoning behind your choice was an aspect of this game I really appreciated.

I also liked that it was easy to play and enjoy with two or three people. My sister and I began playing the game, alternating choices (I would answer one, she would answer the next) and later my brother wanted to join in, so we just began voting on which choice we'd take. The game can also be plenty of fun played solo.

Some people have mentioned the shortness of the game. I found the length satisfactory (there's only so many things a dragon in a fantasy setting can be expected to experience after all) for a little game designed for the Kindle. It's charming, fun, and high enough quality to make me try the other game the company has created.

Great Idea...too fast...

Luis Brandt M "EdgeL @ 2011-04-18

The history and mechanics are great, i had fun...but sadly is a little fast...leaves you with thirst for more...but well honestly is good enough for the 2$...more than that and the 4 stars would have been 3 or 2 depending on how much ;)

Interesting Use of the Kindle

EL Thomas @ 2011-03-23

I got this game to see how Kindle would handle interactive or branching fiction. I really like the concept and boy did I read a lot of Choose Your Adventures as a kid! I thought this one was pretty good, with some cute humor but also some adventure and wreaking havoc. After all, dragons do eat people! The text, in fact, did offer ample opportunities for dragons to eat a lot of people and pillage if the reader was so inclined. It could have tilted a little more in the serious direction but it could also have tilted more into the parody direction too, so it hits in the middle. The 2 dragony adventures I chose lasted long enough that I felt like I got my money's worth. I would definitely try more interactive stories like this for the Kindle.

Epic Dragon Story

A Customer @ 2011-02-21

This book reminds me of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I read it at least 50 times and enjoyed it the whole time. The end came to fast, so I decided to buy another CYOA. ( or two )

i love it!

melissa menard @ 2011-02-20

i love it! I could not put it down, and now i read it to my little sister who enjoys being a dragon.

$1.99

Gladys @ 2011-02-19

For $1.99 it's an okay read which will entertain you for an hour at the most. If you have two bucks to spare, why not? If you're eyeing another book for that price, go for the other one. But for the sake of curiosity, go ahead..

Pretty good value at 99c or $1.99

Whit @ 2011-02-03

Clever! This choose-your-own-adventure was short but fun. If it were longer, I would have given it five stars.

You are a dragon, making decisions about how to live your life, what treasures to gather, and who to kill. The writing is amusing but overall it is not as long as I would have liked.

good but short

A Customer @ 2011-01-30

It is well written with some humor in it. But it ends too quickly which takes away from the entertainment value of it. I had expected a longer choose your own adventure type book but managed to reach the end within an hour. Great for semi long bus rides or sitting in a waiting room but nothing more.

nothing realy like it

A Customer @ 2011-01-29

My dad used to have CYOA books on his old shelves at home. He used to read my one every once and a while. But now that i got one on my kindle, i only wish i could chang the story more...

Clever And Fun Pick-A-Path Book - Recommended

C. F. Hill "CFH" @ 2011-01-29

"Choice of the Dragon" is a fun and enjoyable "Pick-A-Path" adventure that puts you in role of young dragon trying to make your way in the world. While the actual adventure was fairly short, I like that it allows you to customize your dragon's gender and personality which makes the game more enjoyable. I have played it through three times now and have had different endings each time. My son tried it and had a different ending than any of mine.

It was also less than a buck, making it a worthwhile purchase.

Very short, but enjoyable text adventure ... only worth $.99

Alex B. @ 2011-01-26

Took me about an hour to go through the first time, and then played through briefly a few more times to try different paths.

There really are not that many different story paths, however. The way the story mechanics works is during the beginning the ask you some character based questions, and by choosing from the multiple choice list you kind of "build" your characters stats. For example, your dragon character can be a violent bruiser-type with high "Brutality" stats, or a sneaky plotter with high "Cunning." Throughout the remainder of the game, various choices either tilt your character's stats table one way or the other. Also, some choices success will depend on your stat points in a related area. So, it feels a bit like role playing. Kind of cool mechanic. But the relative story itself is pretty short fare, and multiple play throughs appeared to show that the story itself is linear and only made small adjustments based on your character stats. I would very much like to see them use the same mechanics to develop a much more in depth story with some serious forks based on choices. Even some dead ends, like actually dying and having to restart, would have been welcome, but are missing from this.

This was worth the $.99 price I paid for it. Would it be worth the $4.99 non-promotional price? Pass. Go to your public library and pick up one of those classic "Choose Your Own Adventure" series, and relive your childhood.

This game is available for free on their website.

Myrkkin @ 2011-01-25

It was fun, but I was expecting an adventure book, not a short little game that I played already online, for free. Anyway it's only 99 cents, so if you have to have it on your Kindle, might as well. But you CAN play it for free on their website.

Small print

Ellen @ 2011-01-24

This is something different but I would like the print size option to be available as this is smaller than I like. This is one of the reasons why I bought a Kindle. I also wish I could make the whole Kindle store print larger.

Very cool

Sarah @ 2011-01-23

I agree with the majority- Very fun, but really short. A sequel or something like that would be really cool.

Enjoyable!

10lees "10" @ 2011-01-23

I bought this on a whim, for only $0.99 I wasn't expecting too much. It was a cute enjoyable game and is very similar to a choose your own adventure (while preventing me from the rampant cheating I engage in with those novels, or reading it straight through because I'm annoyed). I think it's more fun to replay as you can choose different things and don't have to read as closely! A good buy for a few moments of gameplay.

Fun, Fantasy-heavy choose-your-own-adventure style reading

Dang Lad @ 2011-01-23

This is a fun interactive read for the Kindle. The writing here is definitely more "choice" focused, with explanation of how your choices will impact the story and less focus on the actual narrative. Compared to Choice of Broadsides, which reads more like a novel with interactive qualities, I didn't find Choice of The Dragon as fun.

I will say that this is definitely more fantasy-focused writing, and if you're not into the fantasy genre I would probably pass on this one. Overall a fun book though, and it's tough to beat the $0.99 cent sale!

Beginning the revival of interactive fiction ....

triptych @ 2011-01-22

This app proves that witty writing and a simple game mechanic can result in a fun and entertaining title. The story progresses with a wry humor that will keep you playing it over again just to try out all the various storylines. Highly recommended!

Fun and entertaining

LaNae @ 2011-01-18

I had never heard of interactive books until a few weeks ago when I got an email from Amazon. I decided that since they were at a discounted price I would try out this and one other one. I absolutely loved them! The books are full of choices and humorous commentary throughout. The stories are short, allowing enough time to easily go through the book a few times in one day to make different choices and see where you can let the story take you. Even as enjoyable as this book was for me, a person in their 20s, I imagine it could also provide entertainment to a younger audience as well. I shared this book with family members and they enjoyed it as well, asking "Well how did yours turn out??" I would recommend these books.

Short and Sweet!

M. Z. Fraser @ 2011-01-17

Different choices... different endings... this is a delightfully quick game where you get to wing your way through the adventures of a young dragon, with the ending determined by every action you take. This is a good solid first effort from the "Choice Of" folks, and I had fun playing through several different stories. Well worth the price paid.

Really enjoyed it!

Lindsay Taylor "real @ 2011-01-17

I really enjoyed this book and plan to get more like it. Yes, it was somewhat short, but that didn't matter to me. I knew I could read it again and choose totally different answers to make the story different each time. I also like that it's complete fantasy and YOU get to be the dragon. $4.99 is a little pricey, but I purchased this when it was $0.99.

OK

handerly @ 2011-01-17

This is fun but kinda short. It is also violent, you end up eating people even when you don't want too, but oh well. Over all pretty fun.

Awesome. Great fun.

Russell Hooper @ 2011-01-16

I play RPGs like Pathfinder and D&D as well as video games. This game was a heck of a lot of fun. Choice of Games needs to make many more games like this for the Kindle.

Love Is Short-Lived

LavenderMoon @ 2011-01-16

Such a great premise for a game. So interestingly written and well thought out. The game itself however, is far too short to really be considered a full-scale game. Even at a very leisurely pace where I was interrupted by phone calls and other distractions, I completed it twice in less than an hour. I most definitely found myself wanting more! But in my opinion, especially with a role-playing, create-your-own-adventure format, a gamer should not have to click on 'play again' after just a few minutes time in order to get more. This needs to be MUCH longer. In my opinion, it plays like an experimental version that should be free of charge. AND, there should be a way for the user to notify the game creators with feedback on game play so they can modify it and lengthen it accordingly. Although I truly do love it, I can't help but judge it as a great 'teaser' game that needs a lot more of the creator's attention to be worthy of its genre.

Fun!

S. Lofton "quiet rea @ 2011-01-16

Fun to replay!

A Customer @ 2011-01-14

Great Children's Adventure

BBECK @ 2010-12-29

I remember this style of book as a child. I purchased this one for my son. He received a Kindle for Christmas and needed to spend the gift card that was burning a hole in his pocket. It is not a very long game/book but he enjoyed it very much. He has went through it 3 or 4 times choosing different options. My wife and daughter have even read through it a time or two.

Enjoy,

This was great for getting my reluctant 10 year old reader to do the required 20 minutes of reading for school a night. She even went over the time and asked if she could do it again today. If the creators read this please make more!

Witty and enjoyable

Marais le Lion @ 2011-01-18

I "tried" two dragons (created and played through with two characters) and I am delighted by the wit and fine irony beneath the writing.
It is quite entertaining and has made me laugh a few times.
We normally don't value much the effort behind writing a format like this. I got it during a special offer for 0,99$, but I think 5$ is a decent and reasonable price. I'm off to get more to support their work.
I think this format has a lot of future.
